We are planning to go to the beach this weekend and take our LO who is 3 months old. I borrowed a beach umbrella from a friend and we have some camp chairs and a beach blanket. LO has a swimsuit, swim diaper, and a big sun hat with uv protection. What are we missing?
I am trying to figure out exactly what we need as well as get any advice from those of you who have BTDT!

I know there is some controversy on whether to use sunscreen or not but I'd definitely take a mineral one. Maybe some baby powder to get the sand off.

@mrsrain: great timing! Our LO is the same age and we are also going to the beach this weekend. We've got pretty much the same stuff. Are you planning to take LO in the water? We are going to be at Lake Michigan and I just wonder whether the water is too gross for new baby skin... Though it may be too cold anyhow...

@mrsrain: do you have a wind screen? If you lay the baby down in the shade on a blanket and the wind is crazy (like it usually is at the beach) sand will blow all over LO

If you have a pack and play that is easy to fold up, I'd suggest that as a place for baby to nap.

@CakeLady: I figured we would test the water and see how cold it is. I also thought about taking her inflatable bath tub (the big rubber duck one) and putting some water in it to warm in the sun, and then letting her experience it that way.
@Mamaof2: That is a good point... I will definitely have to give that some thought! Maybe we can rig up some kind of screen.
@Pumuckl: Love the powder idea! Where could I find a mineral sunscreen?

@mrsrain: ditto @MrsKoalas suggestion of a pack n play (or travel crib) if you have one. Plus, an extra blanket to set it on. You could throw a muslin blanket overtop for some shade during naptime.

I agree some sort of wind screen would be ideal. We took LO to the beach and he got covered in sand, when I was changing his nappy the sand went into all his creases and I couldn't get it off with baby wipes! Luckily he did not mind but I imagine some babies would. We just used the pushchair for naps

light weight blankets useful for nursing cover or to cover baby when the wind picks up

We took LO when she was 2 months old. We took a Moses Basket and she camped out happily in there. I am super fair skinned so we did use sunscreen on her. I felt the benefit outweighed the risk. She also wore a hat and was under the umbrella. It was awesome.

We have brought our LO to the beach a few times this summer. I have not put sunscreen on him but always make sure to keep him in the shade. We have not put him in the water so did not bother with the bathing suit. Hats are good even when they are in the shade because it is bright! We brought him in the car seat and took the mattress of a pnp for him to lay on. Mostly he slept in the car seat. Also if you are bfing don't forget a nursing cover. Nursing under the cover was the only way to get him to fall asleep.
