i decided to put off art supplies until they stopped going in LO's mouth--it was stressful and i got frustrated. i've revisited the issue a couple of times and at 21 months, it's still dicey--however i will say that even at daycare, LO isn't really into art activities so i think it's partly his personality.

we couldn't really do art supplies for charlie before 18 months because they went straight in his mouth. i would have only done edible stuff made of food.

Yogurt + food coloring finger paint worked well for LO 2

Chalk went in the mouth but was gross enough that she didn't put it in again after the first few tastes.
We also had the twist up crayons.

@oliviaoblivia: my weirdo isn't put off by chalk. I catch her with it in her mouth all the time.

I think we began at 18 months as well, with finger paint smeared all over his high chair tray and sticking pasta tubes in playdough I'd flatten on the table.
I'd stick to those big puzzles with knobs for a little while longer.

@Mamaof2: Whoa, those are awesome! She'd have to be really dedicated to eat that
@looch: Ha! Well, I want to ask her grandparents for some simple art supplies for Christmas. I know she'll probably have to grow into them!
@Smurfette: I am sure LO would eat chalk too!
@Mrs. Bee: @autumnlove: @hilsy85: No concerns about sending a message that art is food by letting her put it in her mouth?

@daniellemybelle: nope, at that age it's all about exploration! Once she's older she'll understand when you set boundaries.
