Here's some of the better fiction novels I've read recently -
Long Bright River by Liz Moore, hard to put down
She Was The Quiet One by Michelle Campbell, this one kept me constantly guessing 'who did it'. Very good.
The Farm by Joanne Ramos, very good read
The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth, another who-done-it, page-turner

I love these lists! I pretty much pull all my "to reads" from HB
I'm currently on book 3 of the Ember in the Ashes series and really enjoying them.
Why We Sleep and How Not to Die were also great health-related non-fiction reads

I'm just following for some good suggestions! I can't remember the last time I read a book just for fun, which is horrible because I love reading. But our library just reopened so I want to reserve a few! Great idea for a thread!

So many! Basically all I’ve done since March is read books (besides the working/parenting at the exact same time! )
Historical fiction: My Dear Hamilton by Stephanie Dray, The Library of Legends by Janie Chang
Chick-lit type: Well Met by Jen de Luca, The Lies that Bind by Emily Giffin, Class Mom by Laurie Gelman
YA: Majesty by Katherine McGee, Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson

@JennyPenny: Me too!
Just added Ember in the Ashes to my hold list.
Another really good series I couldn't put down (all 10 of them!) was The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning.

This Is How It Always Is was really good, the silent patient was a decent twisty thriller type, where the crawdads sing, and currently reading American Dirt and it’s great so far.

Oh boy, my favourite topics! I've been doing a LOT of reading since COVID - my goal is usually 104 books for the year and I'm currently halfway through books 110 and 111 and it's only October.
Everything by Abbi Waxman - I started with The Bookish Life of Nina Hill and then went to The Garden of Small Beginnings (my favourite) and I Was Told It Would Get Easier.
Anxious People by Fredrick Backman was delightful.
Eat a Peach by David Chang (nonfiction)
The Dutch House by Anne Patchett
Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall
The Truly Devious trilogy and The Name of the Star trilogy by Maureen Johnson - not new, but cute YA. I liked Truly Devious a lot more than The Name of the Star but they were both entertaining.
The Heir Affair by Jessica Cocks and Heather Morgan - follow up to The Royal We
A Little Life was the best book I've read this year and I don't think anything is going to pass it - it was really bleak and hard to read but so incredibly beautiful.
I also just treated myself to six new books - I went on a splurge at Chapters - so I may have more to report later.

Love these threads ! I’m always looking for good book ideas.
I’m currently reading The Searcher ... it’s really good so far. I just started but so far cant put it down.
I also recently read The Girl With Seven Names. It’s about a North Korea defector and was absolutely riveting .

I'm a big fan of young adult books, so most of the books I've read recently fall under that genre. Almost all of these are pretty heavy books emotionally and are not always easy reads due to the subject matter (sexuality, eating disorders, abuse- physical, emotional, sexual, and mental health disorders, etc.)
The Truth Is by NoNieqa Ramos
My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell
Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
The Dangerous Art of Blending In by Angelo Surmelis - I had to take breaks while reading this, it made me pretty upset a few times
The Hypnotist's Love Story by Liane Moriarty - there's a mental health aspect to this book, but not a heavy read and surprisingly good as I wasn't expecting much from this
Christmas Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella - super cute and light, I love Sophie Kinsella and have read all of her books, including the entire Shopaholic series

Following! I have read so much less than I would have hoped during quarantine, but crazy times.
Agree with @petitenoisette: though, Homecoming was fantastic.

Great thread idea!
@charm55: just finished the searcher and it was great! I recommend all the Tana French books.
@petitenoisette: @karenbme: Yaa Gyasi has a new book out—it is on my holds list on my ebook app!
@LadyDi: I was going to come recommend American Dirt! Hard to read at times but worth it and well written.
I have also been enjoying the Maisie Dobbs mysteries, American Spy, and I am currently reading the new Robert Galbraith mystery that was recently released. I also recommend the Vanishing Half and the Mother’s, both by Brit Bennett.

@josina: The Smallest Lights in the Universe was excellent. I don’t like fiction, and I tend towards memoirs, which this was. Sara Seger is a brilliant planetary physicist at MIT whose husband died when they had two young kids at home. It was truly a great read.

Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh (from Hyperbole and a Half) - a super funny and also deep fast read
Maybe you should Talk to Someone - Lori Gottlieb

Loved Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy!
I know many who enjoyed American Dirt, but I read a lot of the criticisms of it before picking it up and decided it wasn't for me.

@foodiebee: This was one of the ones I just bought, glad to hear a good review!
I had a weird experience with American Dirt - I preordered it, and then while I was waiting for it to come I read all the criticism. So I read it, and I enjoyed it as a story in the sense that there was a lot of action and it moved along quickly, but it also frustrated me.

@wrkbrk: I also really love nonfiction - here's some stuff I've loved, would love to get more recs from you!
Nonfiction but not memoirs:
The Feather Thief - Kirk Wallace
The Only Plane in the Sky - Garrett Graf (hard to read)
Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage - Alfred Lansing
I'll Be Gone in the Dark - Michelle McNamara
Memoirs:
Once More We Saw Stars - Jayson Greene
Juniper: The Girl Who Was Born Too Soon - Kelley and Thomas French

@erinbaderin: Thanks for this! I saved your list. I really liked When Breath Becomes Air, Jessica Simpson’s memoir Open Book (promise!), Educated, I’m Just Happy to Be Here, Silent Spring, and a book called Proof of Heaven.
pomegranate / 3595 posts
@foodiebee: thank you for mentioning the criticism about American dirt as I didn’t know there had been significant criticism. This comment led me to google this and read a whole bunch about it that I had not been aware of. I thought the book was well written and I thought she did a good job describing post traumatic symptoms but I can see the bigger picture concerns now that I stopped to consider them. Thanks for helping me understand the book differently!

@MamaCate: So glad to hear that it didn't upset you for me to say that! Thank you so much for your thoughtful response.
@erinbaderin: Migrations was very dark (which I like!) but ultimately hopeful. I hope you like it!

Yay book posts! Some of my recent favorites:
Mexican Gothic - creepy but not too creepy (I'm not big on horror and this was just about comfortable for me)
One to Watch
The Immortalists
Vanessa Yu's Magical Paris Tea Shop
Fighting Words (meant for a middle grade/young YA audience but a beautiful read on a tough subject matter)
There There
Vanishing Half
Maggie Hope books (there's a bunch of them, Maggie is a young woman spy in England during WWII)
Right now I'm reading the Beekeper's Apprentice, a spin on Sherlock Holmes, and really enjoying it.

Hidden Valley Road is the best book I have read this year. Dutch House is next on my list.
pomelo / 5573 posts
@winter_wonder: Tom Hanks read the audiobook?!?! That sounds amazing.
@autumnleaves: I might have to give up on waiting for the library to get a copy of this and just buy it myself.
@wrkbrk: Picked up the Jessica Simpson book on your recommendation, really enjoying it so far!
I know this is so last year but I just finished the Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes and really enjoyed it.

@autumnleaves: I’ve been wanting to read Hidden Valley Road. It sounds really intriguing

@erinbaderin: yes, it was amazing! I need to see if he reads Commonwealth!
@autumnleaves: can't believe I forgot to put Hidden Valley Road on my list! I read that in a weekend bc I couldn't stop!
@miss ariel: oo! I need to pick that up. Her writing cracks me up!

A book that I read that I absolutely hated, even though it's getting huge buzz - Leave the World Behind. I keep seeing countless reviews about how it's such a modern-day reflection of race relations and societal dynamics and I am so utterly confused after having read the book. If someone has read it and thought otherwise, maybe we can talk about it?

I recently read "Rodham" by Curtis Sittenfeld and really enjoyed it!

11-22-63 by Steven King was a really interesting read! I loved it.... i need to watch the series now on Hulu.
Two fun books: Watch Me Disappear and Pretty Things both by Janelle Brown. Very entertaining.
I'm currently reading "A Discovery of Witches" and "Catch and Kill"

Bumping this! I'm curious about any good backlist books you've read and enjoyed? I'm also looking for a cozy Christmas read if anyone has any recs! I read Seven Days of Us several years ago and loved it, so anything like that would be great!
Recent backlist I've enjoyed:
1. Dear Mrs. Bird - AJ Pearce
2. Miss Jane - Brad Watson
Newer:
1. The Authenticity Project - Clare Pooley

@Mrs. Carrot- I just read it yesterday and I do not get the hype. I heard it was becoming a movie or show for Netflix so I'm wondering if I'll like that version more.
I recently enjoyed confessions on the 7:45 by Lisa Unger.
