We're going to do a prefold cloth diaper service, but are responsible for our own covers. For the prefold mamas - what's your favorite diaper cover? How many would you suggest getting?

A friend of mine recommended Thirsties and Bummis to me, so that's what I'm getting (we're doing pre-folds at home).

We have thirsties duo & I've always liked them! Only once have we had a poo leak & it was really because it was closed on the wrong snap! We had 4 size 1 (worn daytime & nighttime) and now have 2 size 2 (only worn for nighttime)

I like flips, but also used newborn thirsties and those were great too!

I thought pro raps worked as well as bummis and thirstiest and they were cheapest! I didn't use ours much though and preferred aios so can't help on the number sorry.

@evansjamie: Yea they fit pretty good! The double gussets are great! P was 5lb 14oz when we brought her home!
She was 2 1/2 weeks in this pic (just over 6lb)

Thirstiest and Bummis. I feel like the Thirsties Velcro doesn't hold up as well.

@runsyellowlites: I can't believe she was so tiny and the Thirsties fit! My LO was down to 7lbs 7oz at her lowest weight and the Thirsties were HUGE on her and leaked everywhere.
I've been using Capris (made by Swaddlebees/Blueberry) on my LO and have LOVED them. They're super trim and we haven't had any leaks or blow outs. I have a stash of Thirsties that I hope she grows into very soon. We have 8 covers in rotation at the moment and doing laundry every other day. Our LO is 2.5 weeks old.

@emg86: Hmmmm... How do you fold your prefolds? We used the newspaper & jelly roll fold so most messes are contained in the prefold. When we would tri-fold it we'd have leaks.

I've used Rumparooz, Bummis, Blueberry, and Thirsties. I like the Rumparooz best. Blueberry and Bummis are tied for second. I didn't like the Thirsties cover that I had - the quality didn't seem very good.
I've had as few as 5 covers in rotation, when I was doing laundry every other day. I'm doing laundry every 2.5-3 days now and have 7 covers in rotation.

Bumping this older thread to see if anyone had any updates/things to add!
We are getting our stash together and plan on using prefolds and covers (wool soakers at night) during the newborn stage. Anyone else have any more input on the best covers to grab? What worked and what didn't?

I'm bumping too! We are using a service for prefolds but I have no idea how many/what kind of covers to get for the newborn stage! I am assuming I should get a few different kinds to see what works? Help!

@babybean404: I asked this question somewhere a while ago, and I eventually settled on Flips (going with a service too). I haven't gotten any yet, but I choose them because they are one size and wipable. Though a friend is going to be giving me some of her size 1 Thirsties.

We got a sampler pack from Jillian's Drawers to see what worked best. All of them were too big when she was first born, since she was a peanut at 6 lb 9 oz. I think we really started using the prefolds around 2 weeks and the Bummis worked best then. It was much smaller than the others, though, so she outgrew it quickly. The Thirsties cover fit for the longest and did a good job, I'd say it was overall our favorite. We also really liked the Imse Vimse cover, but for some reason they didn't send us that smallest size so it took awhile for her to get big enough for it to fit. We were pretty meh about the Flip cover with snaps, I found it irritating to use and DH was constantly snapping it wrong. The only cover we had that I really hated was a pull-up one, I think it might have been by Bummis (?)...DH really liked that one, though.
Anyway, we decided not to continue with the diaper service after I went back to work so we never ended up buying more -- we had a few duplicates of the ones I mentioned above so I think the most we ever had in rotation at one time was 5. If we'd kept CDing at daycare, we'd probably have needed to get 12+ new covers when we went up a size (a new cover for every diaper change at DC, so 5-6 for a full day there, plus enough for home and if we couldn't get to the wash one night).

@babybean404:
We got 2 dozen newborn prefolds from green mountain diaper, 2 of the Velcro closure covers from thirsties in extra small, and 6 size one duo snap wrap covers (thirsties).
The extra small Velcro definitely fit better at first, but the size 1 would have been fine. 6 was more than enough, even when she was tiny and the poop would get on the cover a little.
We got 3 dozen small size prefolds and 3 dozen medium size, as well as 6 size 2 thirsties. We've had more than enough prefolds, we used to go 2 days between but now that she is a year I can go 3 days (and really, have enough diapers to go 4 but it gets smelly so I don't).
We also had two wool covers that we alternated at night until she was 10 months or so, when we started using paper diapers at night.
My daughter is small- 20% for weight and 10% for height but we only recently switched to the size two covers, and are hoping that the medium prefolds will carry us until she is potty trained.

As a NB, I definitely preferred the sized covers. We used Thirsties X-Small covers. Now we are using Thirsties Size 1 covers and inserts, but will be moving up to Size 2 covers in the very near future.

Im super lazy and use flip covers with a prefold trifolded as an insert. No baby wrapping required, and the flips are onesize. Double win!
