I have a healthy stockpile of Bum Genius 4.0 diaps that I have bought brand new and used from a friend. All have been used according to the instructions (washed with CD safe detergent, only CD safe butt cream etc.) I have been having issues with my diapers leaking pretty frequently and started double-stuffing (one reg insert and one newborn insert) b/c I figured DS was a heavy wetter. I'm still experiencing leaking even with one pee. DH is getting frustrated and I don't blame him. What am I doing wrong?! What can I do to stop the leaking?!! I have invested a decent amount of money into CD'ing and really don't want to throw the towel in. Any and ALL advice is welcome!!!

How long have you had them? Do they smell even when dry? It may be time for stripping.

Where are they leaking? Ours are leaking up the side if he is lying on his side, but I don't think I can prevent that.

My son is only 9 months old so they are all relatively new. The used diaps I just got were from a friend who has a 1 year old and she had just stripped them. She had a large supply (30+ diaps for one kid) so all of them are in good condition and not heavy used. I am concerned either the inserts just aren't absorbing or the seams are bad - but on all of them?? It has to be user error!
They leak around the legs mostly.

How is your fit? Are the legs holes snug? Is the inner lining poking out? Is the PUL worn out?

@mrsmate: Sorry, I didn't actually answer your question. No, they don't smell at all when dry.

@ktgee04: Make sure the rise isn't too high. That adjust the fit around the legs the most.

Are they tight enough? If they're leaking out the legs, then the rise is probably too high. Try lower in the rise and tightening the waist a bit.
Also, if they've never been stripped, I'd try stripping them. Wash them as you normally do so that they're clean. Then put a couple of teaspoons of blue dawn dish detergent in your washer and just keep rinsing and rinsing until there are no bubbles left. It took 5 wash cycles with an extra rinse to get mine bubble free. Then hang on the line in the sun. I'd be really surprised if they leak after that.
ETA: you should strip every 6 months, so it's probably time. If you have hard water, you might need to add calgon to your wash too (regular wash, not just the stripping wash)

@Weagle: The fit is ok although I think they could be better around the legs. I am confused how to do this with BG though. I tried to snap them up to make them smaller but then they don't fit well around the tummy/waist.

Have you always had leaks or is this new? Even with cd safe detergent & diaper cream you can still get build up. I would try stripping them.

@Mrs. Stroller: @Weagle: It sounds like it may be a combination of having them set too large (rise too high) and perhaps stripping them once again. Thank you SO much - this has been invaluable.

@ktgee04: Stripping definitely couldn't hurt too. BG recommends running a bleach cycle once a month. 1/3 c bleach instead of detergent. Rinse several times. That method is less likely to harm your washer like Dawn can, as well.

@runsyellowlites: My new ones haven't had a huge issue with leaking but the used ones I got seem to leak a lot more than I'm used to. I think I will try to strip the whole lot of them this weekend like Mrs. Stroller recommended!

We just had this problem - D was coming home from daycare in his "extra" outfit almost every day! It seemed like he was leaking out of the sides of the diaper, so I spoke to daycare and asked them to please make sure to "open" the diaper before they close it so that no white is sticking out. I also thought we might have had detergent buildup (we were using All Free and Clear, which I read once was CD safe, but turns out it actually contains brighteners, so it's not, really). So I bought BG diaper detergent, and did a wash with 2 extra rinses (one extra rinse w/vinegar). So far, so good!

@littlebug: This is exactly the problem! The 'extra' outfit is sent home on him most days and it's so frustrating! What exactly do you mean by 'open' the diaper before closing it? I'm assuming you mean so that no extra white liner is sticking out? I really hope re-evaluating the diaper fit and doing a good strip will do the trick. My DH is ready to throw in the towel and I'm desperate!

@ktgee04: Yeah, so before you put the diaper on, kind of flatten the cover so that the inserts are laying within the boundaries of the diaper, so to speak. Then make sure there's no liners poking out as you fasten it.

Do you have hard water? We started washing with Rockin' Green's hard water (CD-safe) detergent, and that has fixed all of our problems. I haven't had to strip in ages!
Also, how old is your son. Is he still too small to fit the diapers correctly? DD has had fewer fit issues (and therefore leaking issues) as she has gotten older and filled out her diapers a little better.

@skibobrown: We do have semi hard water and I currently use Rockin' Green but I'm pretty sure it says on the bag that it's good for both soft and hard so I figured I was covered!
He's 9 months old and 18+ lbs. How old is your daughter now that she's fitting into them well? I have a feeling I may have the diapers set too big for him now and that could be a contributing factor
