My husband and I would like to take a vacation sometime in the Spring or Summer but we can't really decide if there's anywhere that would be good to visit with a 6-9 month old. Does anyone have any suggestions? Where did you go? Or is it a bad idea?

@Mrs. High Heels: What the best time of year to go to San Diego?

@Mrs. High Heels: I actually suggested San Diego to my husband. I love it there! I'd like to travel up the coast too.

What kind of vacation are you looking for? Any specific geographic area? I think travel at that age is great since they aren't very mobile yet.

@spaniellove: Yes we could really use the trip! My mom wants us to go to Vegas with her but I'm really thinking sin city isn't the place for a newborn lol.

@lamariniere: Any area in the US is up for grabs but certainly the west half of the US is cheaper since we live there. I want somewhere we could relax but also have things to do.

We've only been to the beach and the mountains with our LO. Both were great! I think almost anywhere will be fun If you go into it with the right attitude and expectations. I wouldn't hesitate to take our kids to a city, but we've just never done it.

@marionberry: I'm better with east coast suggestions :-). Washington DC comes to mind. I used to live there when I was in school. We visited when DS was about 9 months and it was a good destination since there is a ton of stuff to do and fairly accessible as far as strollers are concerned. Miami was also a pleasant surprise. You could definitely relax at the beach/pool, but there is still a fair amount to do/see.

@Weagle: We're planning on going over to the mountains after Christmas and I'm sure we'll hit the beach too. That is the one good thing about Oregon - we have both.
@lamariniere: I lived there after school! I love DC. But I think I'd like to go there when he is a bit older and can remember some of it. I went to DC as a kid too. Miami isn't a bad idea though. I've never been there. DH and I talked about a trip to SC and GA so that could definitely be a possibility.

@marionberry: I had never been to Miami before either and was very pleasantly surprised. We went in the summer but I think you can typically go to the beach year round. Our son was 1.5 when we went last year and the water is so warm and shallow that it was a great beach for kids. And the good thing about travel to the big east coast cities is that you usually have a lot of choice for flights and prices can be really competitive too.

@lamariniere: That's good to know that the beach is nice for kids and yes, anything for a cheaper fare!

We took a beach vacation when LO was 15 months as our first family vacation and had a blast. We stayed in a condo so we had control over our food and had access to a kitchen and could walk to the beach and pool. LO seemed a little intimidated by the beach and the pool was more if a hit for her in terms of the water. You can rent a house/condo on vrbo or a similar site and I think that was key for us!

@marionberry: Driving up the California coast is always amazing!!
@Adira: I seriously can't think of a bad time to visit San Diego.

@Adira: there is no bad time! it's a little chillier in the winter so you probably shouldn't go in the ocean around then, but otherwise the weather is always beautiful - sunny, clear skies, warm...

@marionberry: what about palm springs or big bear? we went to santa barbara before, but it was pretty boring. if you want to go all the way up north... monterey bay is also a really nice area - they have an awesome aquarium and 17 mile drive is just gorgeous...

At that age I would probably choose a city destination. They are super interested in everything and it's easy to carry them in an ergo/stroller and go about your day. (I don't like that age for beach/nature because they are starting to stand/crawl and the sand messiness is too high maintenance for me).

@MamaCate: A condo or beach house is not a bad idea! The question is exactly where do I want it?
@Mrs. High Heels: I've never been to Palm Springs or Big Bear. What is there to do at each?
@Baby Boy Mom: We go to Seattle often and I anticipate we'll do that for a weekend trip. It will be a great place to test out vacationing in the city.
