Everything that Google is pulling up is loaded with affiliate links and I am sure there are a ton of legitimate, unbiased tips and walkthroughs... I just don't know how to find them

What sort of resources are you looking for? Hosting recs, how to set up the database, or something more basic?
I've been working with WordPress for ten years, since it was in beta and called "B2". It's famous for the 5-minute install process that you can find on WordPress.org, and I use it for nearly everything. However, securing the right hosting package and setting up databases/gathering database information for the configuration file is usually what slows that down, if you haven't done that before.

@theonewhere: super super basic; I've been using the free Wordpress but want to switch so I can use affiliate ads. So I'm looking for a "dummies" step by step that isn't just shilling for host gator or whatnot!

I'd look for a host with 1-click install, then. I haven't used Dreamhost, but I know they offer it.

Problogger usually has good resources.
If you're willing to switch hosts, Go Daddy is cheap, easy to use and has 1 click installs of wordpress. -
For anyone else who might run into this, I've stumbled on http://www.reviewpon.com/ and I think it's unbiased and helpful!
