My babe is 3 months old this week. He still likes the sling-wrap, but I feel like soon we will prefer the ergo.

Now, recently I asked everyone in the hive when they ditched the ergo's 'infant insert' and most people said at 4 months, or 'with a blanket at the bottom' at 3 months.

I would be inclined to tell you to go to a store and try them out. Depending on your baby's size and general preferences, she might prefer one to another. Some baby stores even lend you some to try before you buy.

The sling wrap packs away very very small compared to the ergo. But I think your main consideration should be what your baby likes.....and you too! Try them on and see what feels best.

@brownie: Regarding breastmilk/formula - I had some packed too and I just let the TSA agents know when I went through that I packed it and they said it was fine.

I just flew with my 4 month old and here are my thoughts on carriers:

Moby: By 3 months he has mostly outgrown the moby IMO. The way a moby is tied causes him to be very high up on my chest so that his head is at my collar bone. It's very uncomfortable. If you wear it in the hip-hold position it's a little more comfortable, but not necessarily for a plane/airport.

Beco Gemini: My son likes this when his dad carries him in it, but for some reason not me. I have no idea why. I am hoping he warms up to it soon. So we brought it so that DH could carry him sometimes, but otherwise I myself did not use it.

Maya Wrap/Ring Sling: This was my winner. I actually borrowed it from a friend after he fell asleep in it while I was at her house. I had never used it before and it is totally my favorite. I wear it so that his legs are out since he's not a NB anymore. This is now the only way he sleeps when we are out-and-about. I wore this all the time while we were on our trip too. I love that it's also compact, I can fit it in the diaper bag.
However, like @Brownie said - it does have metal rings so I did have to take it off to go through checkpoint but it wasn't that bad.

We're flying to the same area when LO is about 4 months old. I'm going to take my ring sling and leave my Ergo at home... though the Ergo is more comfortable. The RS is just easier to pack, and once we get there we'll have lots of willing hands and a stroller to hold LO if the sling gets uncomfortable.

I used the Ergo when flying with my DD (15 and 18m). Be prepared that although the Ergo doesn't have any metal you may still be required to take your LO out to pass through security. I flew out of Dayton, Cincinnati, Baltimore, and Orlando and was required to take the Ergo off and run it through the scanner each time. From what I can tell on the TSA website and http://www.babywearer.com it is up to the individual TSA agents on whether or not they require carriers to be taken off to pass through security.
