My baby (8wks) often feels so hot to me. I take her temp with a Vicks rectal thermometer and it never says more than 99.1 but I take it with a Vicks forehead thermometer and I get anywhere from 99.4 to 100.5. it's so annoying because she feels like she's burning up but the temps are inconsistent and only once have been over 100.4. What thermometer do you use on your newborn?

We have a Safety First thermometer I think. I usually just take baby's temperature under her armpit, but occasionally we do rectally if we want a more accurate reading. DD's normal temperature is between 97 and 98.

I have never been comfortable using a rectal thermometer but have always been told that those are the most accurate. We have an Exergen temporal thermometer. We use that one the most. We also have an ear thermometer that we keep in the diaper bag.

As far as I know, a rectal thermometer is really the only option until 2+ months if you're looking for accuracy. My LO's head get hot all the time, too, but his temp was never higher than 99, so I stopped being too concerned. Now I can tell how sleepy he is by how hot his head is. It gets so warm when he's tired .

We used a rectal thermometer until he was 6 months for accuracy.

We used the ear thermometers until we found out that you can't use them until they are 6 months. Just an FYI, don't get the behind-the-ear thermometers...we got one as a gift and it was the worst!! We now just use the armpit thermometer.

I just use an inexpensive axillary thermometer. In NICU we very rarely do anything other than axillary temps (actually I can only think of 1 circumstance where we use rectal), so that is the approach we use at home. We will switch to a tympanic thermometer at ~6 months age.

we use this vicks rectal thermometer. I didnt like the idea of using a rectal but I did want accuracy

@mrs. Bells - yep that's the one we use. LO doesnt seem to mind at all and I've gotten over my squeamishness about it.
