Yay, NY is not #51! Not surprised at all to see it at the bottom of the list. How does your state rank? are you at all surprised?

FL ranks 37 overall but we break the top 10 for baby friendly environments

MA - #49 for highest cost of infant care. Lovely, 8th over all though? Now sure how that worked out.
Got to say I'm happy to be in MA to have some IF coverage even though the lifetime payout for my crappy insurance is "low", at least it's something.

Yeah, after my rant about short tern disability, not surprised that NY is 45!

41. Which is weird, aside from a triage nurse I loved our hospital!

@meredithNYC: wow, being #4 surprised me a little! I mean, our care wasn't bad at all, i just never expected CT to be #4 overall

@petunia354: I had my first LO in Manhattan and I think anything would be a step up from that, lol. I'm actually looking forward to delivering in Stamford.

When I was actually going to have a baby, i planned to deliver out of Lenox Hill in Manhattan, which is supposed to be one of the best maternity hospitals in the country? [shrugs]. Maybe others are not as good?
NYC always gets rated so low for this kinda stuff. Whatever. I'm looking forward to raising my little Nugget here

@hotchildinthecity: the care was good at NYU, but I couldn't afford a private room and there was just so much room sharing drama. It was also super crowded, and I didn't love waiting for rooms to open up.

@hotchildinthecity: @meredithNYC: for what it's worth, the care I had in NYC was amazing, but I think there are so many people and so many hospitals that it skews the numbers a bit. the better hospitals have some of the top rated practices in the country.

@Pirouette: you're right! That could be it. Same with the schools....lower performing schools probably affect the results even though we have some amazing schools here.
I also always wonder if it skews lower because we live in apartments/dont always own homes. So maybe thats not considered "best" for a child?
(Eta i do understand this poll is about all of new york state but i'm just waxing poetic about nyc since we get a bad rap!)

@hotchildinthecity: well if you look at the details, I think NY did best in the health care section and worse in the environment to raise a baby section, which totally makes sense. Most of the tests are per capita (like child care per capita, etc) and we all know NYC is not an easy place to get child care! And also air quality is in there...I mean that can't be great here haha.
Whether you can raise a child in NYC depends entirely on your individual circumstances, it's not something everyone can do like in other places.
