I keep hearing that between 3 and 6 months is when the real weight loss from breastfeeding begins. I stalled out two weeks ago, but I think I'm starting to see it happen.
Did you see an increase in weight loss at this point?

I kept waiting and waiting and waiting . . . for me, it never happened. My OB told me that I would not lose the rest of the weight until LO weans completely. While I certainly hope that is not the case for you, it has happened to a few of us on here.
Now that my LO is 12 months, I am in the process of weaning her and am looking forward to getting my body back!

I lost 30 lbs in the first 6 or 8 weeks, and then it stalled. At about 3.5 months (I think?) I dropped another 5, fast. So at 4.5+ months I have 5 to go.

I didn't lose much. I gained when I went back to work and freaked out about my supply. I've lost almost 20 lbs. that I gained from 3 months pp to almost 8 months pp. I'm about 4 lbs away from pre-pregnancy weight.
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
It didn't. I gained weight while breastfeeding. But my weight gain was really bad during my pregnancy (only a gross weight gain of about 4 lbs after I made up what I lost from a 9-month-long MS/complete lack of appetite) so as soon as he came out I was automatically a few lbs below pp weight. Now I'm about 12 lbs over, and slowly starting to lose it at 13m pp.

It wasn't till 6 months that I really started losing weight, I was back to my "normal body" and fit in all my clothes by a year. This time I'm gonna try a belly band to see if that helps.

I didn't keep track of weight gain or loss for awhile. I think most of the baby weight came off in the first 3-4 months. I was about 20 pounds overweight at start of pregnancy so I was still carrying a lot of fluff and the post baby belly flop too. It was at about 6 months when I started adding a few sessions of exercise a week that i was able to start seeing weight come off (and I bought a scale). At 18 months when I weaned the last of the 5 pounds or so came off. I'm hoping I follow the same with 2.0.

Aww, I was hoping it happened to somebody! I'm going back to work next week so I probably won't go to the gym much. These last 20 pounds aren't welcome to chill on my thighs forever!
pomegranate / 3895 posts
I'd lost 35 of the 45 pounds I gained by 3 months pp. Currenty working on the last 8 lbs. For me the weight loss peaked in the immediate pp period and has plateaued now (I'm 4.5 months pp, and DD is EBF).

@grizz: Mine goes right along with what you said, 3-6 months, but I also went dairy/soy free at 4 months and my weight dropped FAST after that. Basically because I ate onion bagels, eggs, grilled chicken, and steamed veggies for 8 weeks But that is definitely when all of the sudden my pre-pregnancy pants started fitting again!

I have no idea when it happened but I was down 8 pounds from my pre pregnancy weight just the other week. Which in my case isn't the best because I was less than 120 to begin with. I'm working on adding some more weight to actually feel healthier, especially since I'm pregnant.

I lost 30 with both babies within the first 2 months.
The extra 20 stuck until I started exercising and watching what I ate.
Almost 9 months pp with #2 and I have 12 to go to get back to my wedding weight. 8 for pre-pregnancy.

I lost all my pregnancy weight in the first 4 months (which was higher than where I'd idealy be) and then sat at that weight until he weaned and I'm just now getting serious about getting my body back.

I had pre-e, so I lost a tremendous amount of weight immediately that I doubt had anything to do with breastfeeding. I didn't lose anything after that immediate loss until DS started weaning (around 9/10 months, we were done breastfeeding at 11 months).

My weight loss flatlined from 6 weeks to 6 months. I went paleo at six months pp with no effect on supply and have dropped 22lbs in two months. Before that NOTHING was working to shift the weight.

@chopsuey: @rachiecakes: Yep, I gained 60 pounds and lost 30 of it in the few first weeks (it was gone by the time I went back for my 6 week checkup . . . crazy town swelling!) . . . but the last 30 has been different. I still have 15 to go (20 to wedding weight).

I started losing more around 4 1/2 months - I still have a little ways to go and my doctor had mentioned that she often sees the last bit of weight hang around until you wean. I am about 5 lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight now about 6.5 months out.

6 months and still waiting. BFing doesn't appear to be doing anything for me in the weight-loss department.

I gained 32 during pregnancy and lost the first 22 immediately, within the first week. Since then, despite going to the gym 4ish times per week, walking with the stroller every day, and completely changing my diet, I have not lost one. single. pound. We are at the 6 month mark....here's hoping something starts changing soon, because I don't know what more to do haha! Unfortunately I have quite a bit more I want to lose above the 10 of pregnancy weight, so I am ready to get this show on the road!

@oliviaoblivia: ditto! I went paleo and started losing weight without having to exercise. wOot. I still cheat though
papaya / 10473 posts
@oliviaoblivia: I think that's what is next for me if this sudden quick drop of 5 lbs was a fluke.

@grizz: given that I've never heard it actually happen for anyone...I'm going to guess it was a myth invented by LLL to encourage us not to give up in the hard early months... FWIW breastfeeding isn't doing anything for my weight loss!

L is 7.5 mo and I just got down to my pre-pregnancy weight this week. My appetite has finally calmed down now that he is seriously all about the solids.

I'm not sure because I started WW at 6 weeks. I've lost 30 lbs since then! Before that my weight loss was stalled. I have about 5 or 6 lbs to go and I'm 5 months pp next week.
pineapple / 12793 posts
@grizz: do it! I totally drank the koolaid after my crossfit/paleo/fitness model sister dictated my meals on vacation and I lost six in a week without exercise. It's way easier than I thought and I feel so much better.
@chopsuey: just had a few chocolate covered almonds.....whoops.

Around the second month. I didn't weigh myself for the first six weeks and I was so surprised to see I had lost 25lbs!

I haven't lost weight but gained it while BF. I did the same thing when I was nursing DD; apparently my body feels it needs to hold onto every calorie while I'm BF.
honeydew / 7687 posts
@grizz: yes I did. At 3 months I was still a size bigger even though I was close to PP weight and by 6 months I was back in PP jeans. Now that I have to chase after him it's dipping even lower. Cut yourself slack

@oliviaoblivia: Hmmm I'm pretty sure chocolate covered almonds ARE paleo, if it's dark!

@JoJoGirl: you are totally right. Can't even chat properly anymore. Paleo is in my blood I guess.

This thread kinda makes me feel better because I couldn't lose the remaining weight until after I weaned with my 1st. With my 2nd, I'm still hanging onto some extra pounds and have a feeling it's going to stick around until I wean. Though I have been feeling smaller in just the past week or so - after the 6 month mark. I really think the decrease in breastfeeding now (we just started solids, we're eating every 4 hours instead of 3, he is taking in less) is jumpstarting the weight loss.
I was starting to think I was the only one because some of the other threads make it seem like all the breastfeeding made the weight magically disappear. Not the case for me!
papaya / 10473 posts
@Mrs. High Heels: Me either! I lost 25... And still had 35 hanging on for dear life!

When I started Weight Watchers I started to understand how much BFing was helping. Before that I wasn't losing much but I was also eating like a hog at the trough so that wasn't working for me. LOL.

My LO is 4 months this week (EBF) and my weight loss had stalled too, and then I lost 5 lbs in this past week! Not sure what to credit that to since I have also started eating much better (low carb) and walking more. I hope that, combined with BFing will help the weight loss continue. I've got 25 more lbs to go.

well, i don't want to be the dissenter, but i lost my pregnancy weight around a month out and now at 8 months, i'm down 12 pounds from that! so it's definitely been ramping up for me!

Right now I'm 8 months post partum and am back to my pre pregnancy weight. My clothes fit...jeans tell you no lie. So when I could get them on and they felt comfy again I knew all was right with the world. Ha. I was in shape before I got pregnant and slowly but surely my body is going back. I gained. 33 and had 10 to go 8 weeks post post partum. Those 10 have taken the past 6 months to come off. I workout but I think Breast feeding is causing my body to hold to some weight.
