Will your LO grow up in a home that is smaller or larger than your childhood home?
Either way, do you feel it's enough space for your family plans?

Both my husband and I grew up in smaller homes, but we think this home may be too small for two children. Go figure.

I have no idea! At least the first LO will likely be born into a small space - an apartment or starter home - but we will hopefully end up with something slightly larger than my childhood house for our forever home.

My home is larger than the one I grew up in by 1,000 sq feet. It is the same size as the home my mom had when I was in high school, give or take 100 sq feet. DH grew up in a house larger than ours by 1,000 sq feet. He grew up in a house with 4 kids. Our current house is the perfect size for a family of 4.

Oh goodness, LOs will grow up in a MUCH bigger house! Benefit of leaving my expensive coastal town. Although, I'm a little envious lately of how little cleaning my parents had to do, and how much less crap they could accumulate because they just didn't have room. Big house = big cleaning
Yes, we have plenty of family space. I would actually decrease our house size if we move again. We had no idea what we were doing when we bought our house pre-kids

Bigger! I grew up with a brother and only 1 bathroom for the 4 of us...swore I'd never do that to my kids!

Bigger. I grew up in 3 bed 1.5 bath 1800 sq ft. Dh grew up mostly in a 3bed 2 bath maybe 1400 sq ft. Our house is 4 bed 2.5 bath 2600 sq ft. I think it's plenty big for 1 or 2 kids.

Our current house is smaller than the house I grew up in by about 1000 sq feet. Our little one will come home from the hospital to that house but I'm hoping we are able to move in the first 2ish years of his/her life to a house that is pretty comparable to what I grew up in... our forever home, if you will.

Way bigger. My parents house is 1600sf and there was 6 people in the house. Before my brother was born, we were 5 in about 1000sf. Mine is 2800st and it feels huge to me, i actually think it's too big and wish we'd gotten a smaller place now.

Smaller, unless we move. I few up in the country where land was cheap. I'm not sure how big sq ft wise my childhood home. Our current home is 2300 sq ft, about half of which is a finished basement. We are very happy with the size and don't need more. The bedrooms are a bit small for sharing though, ehich is the only consideration when our family gets bigger.

Smaller! My husband and I both grew up in houses. With LO on the way, we have no intention of moving out of an apartment anytime soon. Recently we upgraded to 900 square feet after spending years in around 500 sq ft or less.

Our house is bigger but we have a smaller yard.

Smaller. It's great if we have 2 kids & it will work fine if we have 3. We hope to expand it one day, it's fine square footage wise but there is literally no "extra" space. One weeks worth of groceries is crammed into he cabinets & right now baby #2 ' s room is a storage/desk/gun room because we literally have no where else to put that stuff. I wish we had known, but neither of us had ever lived on our own before & didn't know what we should have been looking for.

Smaller - I grew up in an average sized house in Chicago, not huge, but adequate for a family of five. We've now just bought a house in England where the houses are a fraction of the size of American houses, and ten times the cost, so until we hit it big, we will not be having an American sized house over here! Fortunately, our new house is only about 200 sq ft smaller (although it doesn't have a basement, nor a garage) but has an additional bedroom and bathroom, plus a conservatory, so I don't think I'll really notice it being smaller....
DH on the other hand grew up on acreage in Australia in a massive house, so this is definitely going to feel smaller to him!

I always lived in apartments and condos growing up. No yard, maybe a small patio, not tiny places, but definitely smaller than our house. I was an only child until I was 18 and by then we had a 3 bedroom condo, then my parents bought a house. I think our house is fine for two small children, but I feel like we will need more space as they grow (or if we have another). I don't mind my kids sharing bedrooms, but our living space is pretty small and we only have one bathroom.

Our house is smaller than my childhood home but bigger than DH's. I think it's the right size for our family.

Smaller. My parents live in the burbs, we live downtown.
DH grew up in a huge country estate so smaller by a lot for him.
We'll probably stay in this house for 5-10 years and then move somewhere bigger.
coconut / 8279 posts
Smaller - I grew up in a big house in the 'burbs, yard, etc. we had a beach house, too.
I live in a small city apartment now. We'll move someday but I don't envision a house as big as the one I grew up in.

Right now, our house is smaller than the one I grew up in. But where we live housing is a bit more expensive (still nothing compared to some places though) than in our parents areas (housing is super cheap where our parents live!)
We aren't in our forever home, and I'd like more space but it is still probably 5-7 years out for that.

Smaller. I grew up in the inexpensive Midwest and am now in the Northeast. I never want a big house, though - too much upkeep and I wouldn't feel right about using excess resources as far as heating, cooling, electricity, etc.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I have no idea of the square footage of the house I grew up in, I'd guess they're about equal, even though I have one more bedroom and one more bathroom.

Bigger - although the house I grew up in was perfect for us growing up.
I would like to downsize when we move in a few years
pineapple / 12526 posts
Way bigger and with 2 less people! I grew up 5 people in an 800 sq ft 2 bed, 1 bath.
clementine / 849 posts
Way bigger. I grew up in a 1100 sq ft house with 5 people - we live in a 2200 sq ft. Though, I'd prefer a slightly smaller home.

Currently smaller than the house I grew up in pre-reno! In H.S. my parents expanded their house with a couple of additions, so now it's way bigger than our house. We only have 1 LO and I already feel we're lacking a lot of functional space. I don't plan on staying here forever.
grapefruit / 4006 posts
Definitely smaller as of now. we live in an 1100 square foot apartment and no intentions to move for the next few years.
bananas / 9899 posts
Right now we're in a home way smaller, but we're moving DD will likely grow up in a bigger home than what I had growing up.
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
Our home right now is smaller but only by a little. When we move he will be in a much bigger house.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
I think our house is a little bigger than the houses I've ever lived in, but it's older and not as updated as the other ones were.
nectarine / 2521 posts
I lived in an RV, then in a converted 2 room garage until age 13...so yeah, our LO is getting a much larger and better space.
grapefruit / 4085 posts
Our house is bigger, it's much bigger for my husband since he grew up in an apt. with his mom and 2 siblings.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
Right now this house is much, much smaller than both of the houses we grew up in. But, this won't be the house our children grow up in. This is our "starter house." I don't want a house as big as my parents', but I definitely want something bigger than this!
watermelon / 14467 posts
Our home is bigger, but not by much. We're feeling the squeeze with one LO, but only because we lack smart storage space. What I wouldn't give for two more closets and a pantry!
pineapple / 12053 posts
Hm... We rent now and this house is MUCH smaller than any place I ever remember living. But my parents had me in a small apartment and then condo before we moved when I was about 2. So those could have been about the same as where we live now. DH lived in a small 2 bed/1 bath place with his parents and 2 sisters until his parents added on when he was 10. But his backyard was huge!

We moved quite a bit, but I think our home is smaller than any of the homes I lived in growing up. I am pretty sure it's smaller than my Husband's childhood homes too. We currently have 1700 sq ft for 5 people, we're hoping to find something around 2800-3200sq ft.
