Anyone watch the Biggest Loser finale last night? I was shocked when Rachel came out, and not in a good way. She once looked like a strong athlete, but she looked way too thin to me at the end. I know TV can make it hard to judge these things though.

I love this show but have always disagreed with their style of weight loss from the get go. I was absolutely disappointed in how this panned out and where this show is going. How is any finalist ever going to win now without going to this extreme unless they change the rules. I lost a lot of respect for the show after this. I'm sure the trainers are feeling somewhat responsible for this as well and are going to take a lot of heat from this.
I hope Rachel did this solely for winning purposes and is not battling a much bigger demon of an eating disorder.

I haven't watched the finale yet...I plan on watching it tonight. I find that the finalists (especially the women) ALWAYS look too skinny when they come out! I don't know if it's just a winning tactic like what fitness models and body builders do where the don't drink water for 24 hours to decrease water retention and look thinner? I just remember a contestant from several seasons ago. I think her name was Helen? She was a little older and her face looked sallow and she looked crazy skinny.

There is a close-up photo of her in a slideshow I saw and she looks awful from the arms, up. Her legs look normal. It's weird. This show does weird things to people's bodies because they lose the weight so quickly.
Also, from that article, I love how people like to make drama:
Frederickson came into the show with a **heartbreaking backstory.** She was a competitive high school swimmer who gave up a full college scholarship to follow her boyfriend to Europe. The relationship ended, and Frederickson came home full of regrets and ate to tamp down her sorrows.Oh goodness, her relationship ended. Poor dear.

OK whoa...I just googled it and 105 lbs?!?!?!? I'm pretty sure she has at least 4-5" in height on me and 105 is the lowest weight I like to be. Ya...too skinny...especially for an athlete!

Yikes, those pictures are really scary. She doesn't look healthy or fit at all - she looks like she has an eating disorder! My favorite was Tara from a couple of years ago - she was strong and healthy AND lost a lot of weight.

Yikes. I haven't watched since makeover week but I just googled and I'd say that's definitely unhealthy. I thought she looked amazing during makeover week- where she was then was probably a healthy weight for her.

This made me think of an old classmate... She recently revealed a 210-130 lb weight loss on FB. All she posts now is workout and food stuff. I guess she wants to lose another 30-40 lbs or something? I'm all for that, if it's a healthy weight, but to do it she eats fairly restrictively and works out TWICE a day. That cannot be a good habit in the long run... It's sad.

rapid weight loss can have huge psychological effects, i'm sure it taking place in such a public way amplifies those effects. i hope that they are offering the participants appropriate counseling support during and after their experience on the show. i developed an eating disorder after losing a significant amount of weight in the past (i've since gained all of it plus more back, it's a slippery slope not to obsess about food, either eating anything vs. hyper controlling intake)
i hope whatever demons she's facing can be kept in check and that she finds peace with her body soon.

I don't want Biggest Loser but I'm curious how the finale works... Do the contestants go home for a period of time beforehand? How are the trainers so surprised by her appearance otherwise?

@mediagirl: maybe they were dramatic in their presentation of her story, they have to make a story out of it for an audience, but obviously it effected her in a huge way. i don't think she deserves to be belittled over it though. i don't know anything about her, but we've all had things that have hurt us, they don't need to make sense to others to still have a huge impact.

@LindsayInNY: Yes, I think they do 12 weeks or so on the ranch if they don't get knocked off. And then they go home for 2 months to try to lose as much as they can by themselves. Then the live finale.

@LindsayInNY: I think so--they have to go home and continue to work on losing weight. We only watch the first few episodes and then the finale, so I can't be positive about that.
I feel like there is a responsibility of the media to speak up that this isn't healthy. I wonder if NBC will address this.

@mrs. bird: Edit, I see you say you don't know anything about her so I retract that statement about knowing her personally and still leave you with: We're talking about a TV show and the media, essentially. If you put yourself out there in the public eye, you have to be willing to accept criticism with the praise because there will always be people on both sides.

I do think the weight loss was shocking, but I can understand how someone would get into the mindset that they had to go to extreme measures to win. It's unfortunate and irresponsible that the game is played to award such extreme measures, but that's what makes good TV, I suppose. I agree that it's sad all around.
On the other hand, when I compare this woman to most Hollywood actresses, she seems to be in line with what is considered "normal" in the entertainment industry. I wonder why we consider it so shocking in one context, but take it as par for the course in another.

@meredithNYC: I was thinking that, too when I looked at her photo. I was wondering if maybe she didn't look so good because she wasn't done up by a stylist. But then I remembered, this show does that - they have stylists do you up before the show. Personally, I think it's all about your body type if you can pull off 105 pounds or not. Looking at her, it doesn't seem like she can.

@meredithNYC: true, but the Biggest Loser is about (at least, it's supposed to be about!) promoting a healthy lifestyle, not the glamour of Hollywood.

I think it is extreme... but at the same time, look at the TV host and the trainers - they are all super trim, which is the way most athletes and stars are right now. I'm sure she had the mindset that she needed to look like that in order to win.

@Happygal: Right - but if it's unhealthy for this woman to be this thin, certainly it's also unhealthy for actresses to be so slim, glamorous or not. I just wish we did not normalize being underweight in certain industries or equate glamour with being extremely thin.

@mediagirl: like i said, i don't know anything about her. this thread is the first i've ever heard of her. i'm not a fan of reality tv. she put herself out there for others to judge her body and it appears to of had an extreme effect on her, perhaps in dangerous way. i can't understand her choice to appear on such a show, but i can sympathize with the effects of BDD, how unexpected its development is, and how support rather than criticism can make a big difference in healing. maybe i personalize comments a little and it's probably a better choice for me to avoid reading similar topics in the future.

she lost an extra 45 lb in the 2 months on her own? That's like 5 lbs a week....and is not safe
Even extreme body builders and fitness competition people don't lose that much mass in a week!

DH and I watched last night (we watched the season), and I was horrified when I saw her walk out. Her eyes and cheeks were sunken in, her knees looked knobby, and she looked like she had almost no muscle definition in her arms! I hope she gains some weight back.

Yes, I was shocked at how thin she was! The "at home winner" was too skinny in my opinion also. I watch the show every season and usually the winners look athletic and strong. Rachel seemed anorexic

I don't usually watch this show, was this live? I do not think they should have had her back on the show. What kind of message is this sending? This isn't good for anyone, especially not her. This kind of weight loss just isn't safe. I'd like to kick the producer who OKed this.

At 5'4" and 105, she is technically underweight by BMI standards (18.0 versus 18.5 to be at the very bottom of the *normal* range) . . . Although she is still healthier (BMI-wise) than many runway models who routinely pop up on the BMI range at 17 and under! But I would hate to know what that *cost*her in terms of her overall health and her ability to maintain her weight/a normal weight.
@mrs. bird: I agree with you. I don't think this is anything to make light of.

Good lord I'm 5'2" with a smaller build and can't imagine being 105lbs! I hope she gains some back now that the show and competition is over and her family and friends can help her open her eyes...

This made me really sad. This season is the first time i have watched the show and it has actually been really motivating to me as i have been working really hard myself. Rachel especially has really inspired me. When she walked out my jaw dropped and i felt a little ill. I hope she is okay
i wish all of the finalists could be given a goal, and then recieve the prize if they meet it. There comes a point where you shouldnt lose more, and the competition should be about meeting your goal and not just losing the most.

I haven't watched the finale yet (forgot to record it), but I've seen a few photos around. She was looking so incredible during makeover week, etc. and this just went too far. I don't think she has dealt with the issues that led her to be overweight in the first place (food addiction, etc), so I wonder if her current weight is a result of those issues.
