I'm thinking about getting DS1 a balance bike for his birthday. Does anyone have recommendations for helmets? Should I also buy wrist guards and knee pads?

We went to REI to have a helmet fitted for DS. It was kind of spendy though.
I probably wouldn't do wrist guards or knee pads unless it was for roller blades or a skateboard.

I took my DS to Target and let him pick one out - I guess I assumed they were all the same and provided head protection - regardless of cost.

Thanks! I think I'll swing by Target this week with LO to have him pick one out.

We're shopping for a helmet, too! My plan was to go to the store and let LO try them on, but I'm seriously considering buying a cheap one on Amazon. I'll look into more expensive ones for when she's really mobile.

@SugarplumsMom: Target has them for 19.99 - 22.99 as the average price.
The ones I found on amazon were also ~$20
This was the one my DS picked out - have had it for 2 years now - he loves it!

We bought one at the local bike store - I would have to check the brand! I wanted one that he could try one so that I'd be sure to get the right size.

I would just make sure it fits properly otherwise it doesn't offer very much protection. It shouldn't wiggle once it is on his head. He should be able to shake his head without it moving around.
We got ours from REI on sale. We have a Giro that can be adjusted as her head grows.

Both DD and DS have Belkin helmets. DD's is going on two years without any problems. I bought DS' on sale last year when he was too young to use it but it was too good a deal to pass up.

Giro from Amazon. Most of the stores we have access to (Walmart, Target) don't have helmets for under 3 years old. He loves his helmet and we have had it for a year.

Thanks for everyone's input! I'll have to take a look at the Giro helmets in stores too.
