Is it crazy to plan a birthday party for LO1 for 9 days before I am due with LO2? I am not terribly concerned with how I will feel if I am still pregnant--more just concerned that I could be going into labor right then. LO1 came 5 days early, for reference...

I think you're okay. If you're not worried about how you will feel and can handle hosting at that stage then go for it.

I wouldn't. Not because I'd be worried about feeling bad, but because if I had planned a party for 9 days before my due date with LO2, I'd be in the hospital delivering the baby during the party!
Could you do it the weekend before just to be safe?

When I was pregnant with my second, I planned my firsts bday party for feb 25, I was to have a RCS March 6. I thought I was safe and wanted to celebrate my first before my second came. Wellllll, my water broke Feb 22 and the party was cancelled!

I'd probably do it if I didn't have history of preterm labor and will likely need to be induced early for precipitous labor. Our sons will be 24 months apart. I'd need to plan #1s a few weeks ahead of #2s due date, but that runs into holidays so I think we are going to skip it. Are you okay canceling it? If so, I'd do it.
PS. How is the hospital near your weekend house, just in case? -

I guess if i had to reschedule it wouldn't be the worst thing...were just using the rooftop of our apt building.

@raintreebee: in would be ok rescheduling for his actual birthday which is 2 weeks later. The hospital near our home is ok I think? I have no idea actually--it's the main one in Albany. Hoping we have no reason to use it!

I was induced the first time a day before my due date, and delivered 10 days early for my second. So that wouldn't have worked out well for me!

My two were supposed to be 10 days apart. However, LO2 arrived 3 weeks early. I had no history of early labor or any signs that she was going to be early. Luckily I hadn't planned anything!

Do you have a lot of people coming from out of town or mostly local? I think I would plan to have it the day you are thinking and have everything ready, and if you need to reschedule for a later date if LO2 comes early then do that. I would base it on if you have out of town people coming in, are you paying to reserve the space that day, are you going to make tons of food for it in advance, etc.

As long as you are able to cancel and aren't out a bunch of money you should be fine. Maybe do food shopping the day before.
We did her 3rd birthday about 10 days before I was due. We just invited friends to meet us at a local splash pool. We brought some juice, watermelon and chicken nuggets (from ChickFilA).

I would personally cancel the trip to the summer house and move the party up a week. I would hate to tell my 3 year old his party is cancelled because baby is arriving!

@NovBaby1112: it's all local (LO's friends from the neighborhood, and a few that would be coming from the suburbs). And I'm fairly close with all of them, and I feel like they would all be very understanding! No one needs to really make travel arrangements or anything.
@T.H.O.U.: yeah I wouldn't be making anything. We'd do bagel platters for the adults and pizza and cupcakes for the kids probably!
@regberadaisy: I mentioned this to DH, but he was kind of against it
we wouldn't be able to be up at the house in that case after Sept. 12th/13th, so could be like 2 months--we've never gone that long without going up. Also, this is just my LO being obstinate, but I asked if he wanted a fire truck birthday party today and he said, "NO! No party!" 
but I do think he would be disappointed, you're right.

I wouldn't do it. My first came a week early and my second was almost 3 weeks early!

@hilsy85: he came at 37 weeks 1 day! So I totally thought I was safe with the party..... Guess not! At this point w joke that we don't do second birthdays (I'm due with my fourth with a RCS the day after our youngest turns two!)

did you go early with #1? I was late with #1 and late with #2. I threw E's bday party at about 36 weeks pregnant and I mostly just sat around and let everyone do everything. I would've personally felt OK throwing a party 2 weeks PP provided I didn't have to do anything. Just ordered food, etc.

@blackbird: I was 5 days early with Lo1. I am totally not worried about the party assuming that I am still pregnant. I would be worried about having a party with a newborn, considering that it would be outside and I would still be figuring out nursing...although the party would only be about 2 hours and a newborn would prob sleep through the whole thing. Hm. Maybe we should do end of Oct then, I imagine LO2 will be here by then.
ETA oh right but my concern with that would be that it would be too chilly on a rooftop at the end of October.
No indoor space available.

I wouldn't. DS2 came 2+ weeks early because of low fluid. You never know what can happen that late!

@hilsy85: hmmm...could you do it mid sept? Kinda early, but at least that way he would have a party and you wouldn't have to worry about it....at this age I don't think they would notice it's a month early! But not sure if you would be at your other house then too?

@lamariniere: SSSHHHHH. My LO is due ten days after LO1's bday. I will cry my eyes out if he comes 3 weeks early. Do not tell stories like that!!!

My son was born on his due date so I wouldn't be too concerned with an early baby although obviously it happens all the time. I would throw a small party, have my husband pick up catering and make it casual enough that if we canceled last minute due to a surprise early baby it wouldn't be a big deal.

I would skip the weekend at the summer house and do the party a week earlier. I know that sucks, but my LO would definitely be really really upset if we cancelled her party because her baby brother was coming. 3 year olds can't understand that you have no control over that, they just know they aren't getting their party. My LO2 is due ten days after LO1's bday, but we're having her party 12 days early, so I'm hooing the 22 day buffer will be enough! Luckily it's a joint party with another friend so even if I'm in the hospital, she's going to her party and my friends can be in charge!

@hilsy85: I would not, I had an emergency induction at 39 weeks and was briefly on bed rest before that.

I went overdue with my first but two weeks early with my second! I felt amazing at two weeks pp though so I'd schedule it for then!

@hilsy85: I'd do it! As long as you're having it at your place and not out somewhere that you'd lose a ton of money if baby came early, it's totally doable. I would maybe just refrain from telling LO about the party until the morning of just so that his hopes aren't up if baby comes early.
Are we crazy for doing LO's birthday with family the weekend after my RCS?? My RCS is scheduled for the 21st, and LO's birthday is the 26th. I was hoping we could have family over for cake!

We had our son's second birthday party a week before I was due with his sister. We had it at our house, just in case I went into labor before, and we wouldn't lose a deposit somewhere. Had I gone into labor the only money we would have "lost" would have been the cake. And you can still eat cake without a party!

i would plan for it before with last minute cancellation plan in place! i would much rather do it beforehand and have it out of the way then worry about how i'm going to be feeling post partum (and i felt great afterward, but still!)

@hilsy85: Just curious what you planned and how it went? We are in the same situation where LO1's birthday is 9 days before my due date and right around Labor Day so scheduling is tricky. Would love to hear your experience!
