What would you wear to a black tie event?
I guess I am wondering if a regular LBD is good or if I need super fancy??

Does the invite just say Black Tie? Or does it say "Black Tie Preferred"?
I think normally for Black Tie, you should wear a floor length gown. If it's just "Black Tie Preferred" then I think you can wear a cocktail dress.

Agree with @Adira: - normally black tie means you need a long dress. If it's BTP, you can get away with a fancier LBD, but you need to *really* dress it up with jewelry and fancy hair/makeup.

@blackbird: Yes! Rent the Runway is *made* for these kind of things.

@Adira: @septca: Its Black tie - ok so I need a long dress - good to know!
@blackbird: I thought of this - I get emails from Rent the Runway but I feel like I have such an odd body shape and would hate what they send me! I take 20 things into the dressing room and might buy 1!

I agree about the long dress. I'd also wear my special occasion jewelry!

@Mamaof2: The advantage of Rent The Runway is that they have a bunch of photos of women (previous renters) wearing the dresses with many different body types. So if you see someone who has similar stats to you in terms of size/height/etc. and you like the way the dress looks, it will most likely look that way on you.

@Mamaof2: What kind of body shape are we talking about? If you look on Nordstrom's website for JS boutique, they have a lot of formal, floor-length jersey dresses that are really flattering and forgiving. I bought a Grecian-style dress from that brand when we were TTC - ended up being able to wear it to 4 weddings, including pre-pregnancy and at 27 weeks pregnant (it was *really* forgiving).

@septca: super small chest - wide hips and heavy thighs! ugh!
I will check out Nordstrom for the JS boutique

Black Tie is formal. I would wear a tea length or longer dress or a gown depending on venue and event type.
Lord & Taylor has some gorgeous dresses. The one near me has way more to choose from than Nordstrom. I would also hit up a Macy's in a high end area.

@Mamaof2: That's actually a great body type for long dresses because you can play up the neckline and hide your hips. I would look for something empire-wasited or Grecian. You want flow and all the dazzle to be at your neck/chest.

Thanks everyone - the event isn't until Feb 7th so I have time - maybe I can even lose some lbs before then!

@septca: Oooh, that dress would look GORGEOUS on a pear-shaped lady! I almost want to get it for myself!!

@Mamaof2: Acutally, that dress will look more elegant on someone who has a smaller bust. Think Natalie Portman . . .

@Mamaof2: I agree with @MsLipGloss: you can rock that dress with smaller boobs. I love that dress!

I would probably NOT wear a long dress, unless it's a much older crowd. I would wear a LBD in a fancy material (satin, not jersey) and amp it up with jewelry and nice shoes.
