I'm such a sucker for this.
This woman came up and grabbed my belly and was rubbing it, saying "Aww, bless your heart!" and it kept me from telling her to get her hands off me.
Lol, I don't know why but it's like a free pass.

HAHA yes I think a "bless your heart" would stop me from being defensive too.

I don't mind it coming from an older woman, but not from someone my age. Same for people who call me sweetie/honey/etc--it's fine if you're 50+ (MAYBE 40+ but I'm almost 30!), but if you're my age or younger it makes me want to get violent.

I'm 22 and she was probably 60+ so it was really sweet/innocent. As much as I hate my belly being rubbed, I just felt like she was being grandmotherly.

Haha I think of "bless her heart" as the southern way of giving yourself a pass for saying something really mean! IE "she's such a slut....bless her heart"

@MamaMoose: that's how I have always heard it used. I caught myself using it the other day and I felt so judgmental and old.

Ha! I'm Southern and say this all the time:). DH (from NY) finds the saying so intriguing and he also started saying it!
