Sorry if there was another post on this, but I didn't see it.

I saw some media coverage of NYC Mayor Bloomberg's plan to lock up formula in the hospitals so that more mother's will be encouraged to breastfeed.

WTF? Tell me I'm not the only one who wants to kick him in the balls?

First, I don't get what he thinks this will accomplish. It will still be available, but it will be treated like other medications. Mom's who want it will ask for it. Those who want it but don't feel they should be asking for it will be the most impacted as they are made to feel badly for their choice to use formula. So add to pregnancy/birth hormones some policy making you feel like a drug addict and bad mom because you want to use formula to feed your child? And the struggle/stress on a new mom trying to breastfeed when she doesn't want to?

Second, where is the respect and support for new mothers? Wouldn't offering free appointments with well trained lactation consultants during the hospital stay and afterward be a better way to encourage moms who want to nurse? Or providing free breast pumps to moms who have to return to work but want to continue to feed breastmilk?

And thirdly, what about a mother's right to chose? Are mom's who do not want to breastfeed going to be treated poorly because they want to use formula? How will treating formula like a medication affect the treatment of moms and babies during their hospital stay? And after they are home? This will only increase the public stigma that formula is bad.

What do you think? This has me all riled up, in case you couldn't tell.
