Great books for a 12 year old girl? (she's really 10, but very mature for her age and interested in older things).

Matched by Ally Condie, Divergent by Veronica Roth... Maybe Newsflesh trilogy by Mira Grant if she's into things like blogging and zombies? Trying to think of mature books that aren't too explicit (always the hardest part of being a high school English teacher). I loved the Piers Anthony Xanth series growing up too

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and Wonder by RJ Palacio are two of the most amazing books I have ever read, and they are geared for 8-12 year olds

@scg00387: I'm not sure what she is into! I have never met any of these girls. Technically my nieces, through DH. They live across the country. They live in California, travel the world a lot, and are kind of fashionistas (their mom is a jewelry designer, very glam).

Hunger Games, the Veronica Roth books that @SweetMamaM: suggested. Also, Gail Carriger's 'Finishing School' Series (first one is called "Etiquette and Espionage." I adore them! The age range is 12 and up
Oh! Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles series. First one is called 'Cinder'. Absolutely LOVE those books.

I second Wonder! Anything that can enthrall 81 5th graders is a good thing for me.

Totally agree with Wonder and Cinder, already mentioned above. Both big hits in my Middle School. Also, the kids love the Clockwork Prince series, still like Diary of a Wimpy kid series(new one just came out), Origami Yoda series, Amulet graphic novels, and a whole lot of Manga.

I'm reading Wonder now and I think it's a great book for that age!

Other suggestions:
Princess Academy (series) by Shannon Hale
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
When I was a tween/young teen, I loved everything by Madeleine L'Engle. She has the Wrinkle in Time books, which are amazing fantasy, and the Austin family books, which are more generic fiction. I also loved her stand alone novel And Both Were Young, which is about two young teens at a Swiss boarding school; kind of a coming of age novel for girls.

I LOVED the Princess Diary books and started reading them around that age. Actually, I still love them. Haha! The later books aren't really appropriate for her age, but the first few in the series totally are.
