I'm visiting friends this week. Their daughter is 8 and son is 6. What are some great books I could buy each of them as a gift? They love reading and i prefer giving books as gifts.

Yes, My Weird School is awesome! Other popular series in my 4th and 5th grade library (9-10 years old) include Franny K. Stein, Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls, Jack Stalwart, Big Nate, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Jake Maddox, Hank Zipzer, Geronimo Stilton, 39 Clues, etc.

Hmm.... 6 and 8 are what-- 1st and 3rd grade? Are they boys or girls? I'll recommend what my elementary schoolers were into when I was an elementary school librarian.

I'll second Allie Finkel and Franny K. Stein for the 8 year old. Babymouse was also popular at my library and the Wayside School books are great.
For the 6 year old, you can't go wrong with Mo Willems or Kevin Henkes.
