I'm a...large chested...pregnant lady. I bought some nursing sleep bras to bring to the hospital in hopes of wearing them during labor as well as after. Were you allowed to wear a bra during labor and delivery?

Yes I as allowed, but don't do it!!! It was annoying bc it interfered with skin to skin. My midwife was like, "why are you wearing that??" Lol. Rookie mistake!

At the birth center, I was allowed to do whatever I wanted. But, then I transferred and at the hospital they just gave me a gown and I didn't think twice about whether or not I wanted to keep my bra on.
I think if I was further along with the birth center I would want it off. It's better for skin to skin contact and to establish nursing when it's off.

I wore one of those soft sleep nursing bras under my hospital gown. I was more comfortable wearing one than not (even though I'm not large-chested!), but it did get tangled in all the IV lines when I had to remove it for skin to skin! No one actually minded though, they just thought I was funny for wearing one.

@sslm: this!!
I birthed stark naked so that I could do skin to skin right after birth! I labored in the gown though.
But "allowed" to wear a bra? Yeah, I don't see how that would be an issue!

I was "allowed" to wear one. Didn't. I thought I'd be more modest, but I was most comfortable buck naked. Even in front of my mom while doing nipple stimulation. Jeez.

Yes I was. I'm not large chested, so I guess I wouldn't have cared either way But I came in to the ER wearing a kind of loose sports bra and the nurse told me I could keep it on if I wanted. So, I did. I think the anesthesiologist had to weave the epidural tube under it but otherwise did not get it the way. This is gross but I didn't even take it off till sometime the next day when I showered. lol.

I don't remember if I was allowed to have one or not, but I have smaller ladies, so I didn't care. But I agree with others - don't wear one if you want to be able to do skin-to-skin! As soon as Xander was born, he was placed on my chest, and then shortly after that, I nursed him. A bra would've gotten in the way of that.

I was told to get completely undressed before putting on the gown. I didn't mind.
I agree about the skin to skin! And who knows how long you will be wearing the same bra...I wouldn't want to suddenly get uncomfortable in it while in labor.

I have no idea because I'm sure I didn't want one. I hate wearing bras. Plus I wanted to be ready for some skin to skin right after.

They told me a nursing bra or no bra at all: thankfully I had a soft cotton nursing bra on. I don't do floppy boobs at my size and was much more comfortable with a bra on!!

oh Good thread.....I can't stand the feeling of the girls hanging down on my stomach (I even sleep in bras), but I ahdn't though of this. I have some nursing "sleep" bras, so maybe I'll wear one and see how I feel in the middle of things.

Another large chested bee here (currently an F cup while BFing...eek!). I wore a nursing sleep bra throughout labour and my eventual c-section.

I wore a cotton bra through labor but I had to take it off when I went in for a c section. I probably would have kept it on had I had a vaginal delivery but in retrospect it was more convenient not to have to take it off for the immediate breastfeeding and skin to skin.

I wore a bra but wish I hadn't! I wanted to take it off immediately for along to skin but it got tangled with my IV and I ended up making the nurse cut it off of me.

I wore a sports bra type thing but at some point in labor, it came off. I do remember wanting to wear one, but I can see how the nurses wanted me to take it off b/c of getting an epi and skin to skin after birth.

I started out wearing one but after 24 hrs, hopping in and out of the birthing tub when they were all wet, I eventually ended up without it.

I had one on, wanted to keep wearing it, but was asked to take it off when I got my epi.

Nope, hospital policy is just a gown in case there is need for emergency c-section. I wore a nursing tank during my stay after I got cleaned up.

I don't know if I was allowed or not but I didn't wear one.

I am large chested and hate hate hate not wearing a bra. When I arrived at the hospital I was wearing a sports bra. It was fine for during labor and delivery but afterwards the nurses had to help me out of it so we could do skin to skin. Next time I plan on wearing a sports bra that zips up in the front that I wore a lot as a sleep nursing bra.

I can't remember if I wore one or not (I'm starting to think that I don't remember much of L&D!). I don't think anyone would have had a problem with it or known if I was wearing one though. They were more concerned with other areas

I wore one of those coobie (sp?) ones and it was great. I didn't wear the gown though, oping for a cotton stretchy skirt until it was time to push.

I wore a sports bra during labor and then switched to a nursing bra later on.

Thanks for all of the replies so far, ladies! I am so uncomfortable without a bra on so I hope I can wear one I until the epidural.

@swedishfish: I'm really glad you started this, I am large chested as well and wondering how this would work.

I voted I didn't care cause I have no idea if I even wore one. I can't remember. Is that bad? If I did it must have been a nursing bra, wore then at the end of the pregnancy cause I couldn't stand under wire any longer.

@matador84: I'm totally going to see if mine still fits. I LOVE them and that sounds like it would be perfect.

The nursing sleep bras are really comfortable if you feel like you need to wear something for a little support. Just plan to have a nurse cut it off of you near the end of labor so that you don't have to worry about navigating all the wires during its removal and can do that skin to skin with your new baby right away.

I wore a nursing 'sleep' bra, no wires. Wore it during labor, the epidural and birth. There were some complications so we didn't get skin-to-skin but I don't think it would've been a problem, it was easy to pull it down/around/off when needed.
I had a gown on but with the monitors and IVs and everything I was just wearing the bra at the end.

@swedishfish: I googled and just found this. I may order one and check it out. It's a front-closure sleeping/nursing bra. Looks comfy and pretty easy to unsnap for skin to skin time.

hmmm i think i vaguely remember being asked to take everything off for the gown. i remember just dropping everything i was wearing on the floor and not caring who had to pick it up as i stumbled to another room! hahah pain makes me forget/not care about anything!

I usually go out of my way to not wear a bra if I don't have to, so I anticipate that I won't be wearing one during labor unless my boobs are gigantic (D-cup and still rising).
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
I was allowed but I had no interest in wearing it. I was so sick that anything on my body was too much. I'm shocked that my robe stayed on!
