@simplyfelicity: So glad he got a good session in! Everyone has given you some great advice. I just wanted to respond to your question about his lips after feeding. I personally don't think that his lips indicate a latch issue (he looks milk drunk and content )- but those are easier to diagnose while he is nursing. Also, your nipples will let you know if there's a latch issue.
Both of my girls had shallow latches and I wanted to scream every time they latched for weeks. If you're not feeling a lot of pain with each session, I think you might be good.

Yep to what others have said - you can tell a poor latch from how your nipple comes out more than his lips. A LC will be able to explain that to you and check it out in person.
I know folks always say supplementing is detrimental to milk supply and it can be, but for us I found that LO nursed better as a newborn when she wasn't starving. Hungry newborns are usually lethargic and won't nurse enthusiastically. So maybe a little formula got him going in a good direction and things will improve!

Just wanted to say that having his ties treated will likely make a huge difference - he is probably having a hard time transferring milk and so will be stimulating your supply less (although I agree with pp that 2oz at 6 days is great!) My son was tied and also had issues gaining back his birth weight. Hang in there!

You've had lots of great advice so far so I just wanted to say youre doing great and hang in there! Keep offering the breast at every chance you get and keep working to get a comfortable latch. You might even find you can flip your little guy's lips out once he's latched and that might help you too

It seems like you're getting tons of awesome advice and encouragement, so I just want to say, hang in there!! When in doubt, just keep offering, keep him at the boob to boost supply! It sucks those early days when you just feel like a milk cow, feel like you don't have enough etc. But you WILL come out the other side!
I had flat nipples and DD had a weak latch and we literally used a nipple shield from birth till like 6 months!

@Kemma: Yes! The lip flip! DH would do it for me because I had to use both hands to get her positioned right. Oh, the days when it took three people to nurse one baby...

Thank you everyone! Having support through this makes all the difference. We went to see an LC and did a weighted feed. He took 5 ounces! She showed me how to massage and squeeze my breasts and she gave me a bunch of loot-- reusable cooling pads, this tube thing so I can suppliment with my own milk while he feeds, nipple creams etc. He nursed for a good 30-45 min and was milk drunk.
I made an appointment to fix his tongue and lip tie tomorrow-- yay!!! She said he has a shallow latch but my supply is just fine and actually pretty good considering our rocky start. So, our plan is for me to feed him as long as he will every 2-3 hours or so (using the tube thing) and then to pump for 10 minutes after.
We are at the ped again to get weighed.
We also have another appointment with the LC on Thursday to see how things work after fixing the tongue and lip tie.
Whew!!! Only 6 days postpartum and ish is getting real.

@simplyfelicity: awesome on the weight gain!!! I was just reading along.
T was in the PICU at 3 days due to dehydration. Scary. My milk came in when we got to the ER- so we did not end up supplementing-they got me pumping in the hospital.
Per our LC from the PICU I fed her at the breast as long as she would go at least every 3 hours then gave a 30-45 ml bottle (usually DH did this) while I pumped- rinse and repeat 8 times a day for the first couple weeks. It was rough. I had 1x a week LC appointments. T was not transferring well. She did not have latch issues- she just needed to get bigger and stronger. Eventually we slowly dropped bottle feeds and pumping. We nipple shield weaned around 8 weeks. By 10 weeks things were great. Now I only pump after her first feed- about 10 oz and give her a 2 oz bottle with probiotics before bed.
I got a scale from Target with .1 on it. I weighed her and myself then just me and did the math to get her weight (remember to convert 1/10 lb to 1/16 in oz) that helped me see an upward swing.
She's now gaining great- and pumping gave me a bit of an oversupply so I have a big stash. She is 18 weeks.
How did it go with the LC?

@simplyfelicity: I just want to say you are doing a great job mama! Breastfeeding is hard and I'm so proud of you for everything that you are doing! It will get easier!

@simplyfelicity: girlfriend if he drank 5 oz at 6 days old you are doing more than fine. I would go with what feels right and obviously follow your doctors advice but I wouldn't be worried about supplementing at this point. That is a LOT for a newborn to drink.

Following and chiming in to say that YOU are amazing! I'm really impressed, and it sounds like you and your baby are doing great. I hope that clipping the ties makes everything easier.

One more voice chiming in to say hang in there and you're doing great! The early days are SO hard.

@youboots: Great job! Sounds like he maybe just needed to get a little stronger and nurse for longer! Transferring 5 oz at 6 days old is awesome!!!

@simplyfelicity: I think it's safe to say that your milk is in and your little guy is going great! Just keep working at it and remember that you're both still learning

@simplyfelicity: I think you got some great advice here! I also think your milk is def in. Are you getting engorged at all? That's how I knew my milk was in, it hurt like crazy!
Both my son and daughters lips looked like that after nursing so I'm not sure it has to do with lip ties, but the difficult latch could def be caused by that
Eta: just saw he gained 7oz in 24 hours! Hooray!!! Great job mama and baby!

@simplyfelicity I had some of the same challenges with poor weight gain and supplementing at first. One thing I wold recommend is a good probiotic for baby if you notice he is really gassy/fussy over the next few months. Sometimes when they don't get enough colostrum they don't get a as much goodgut bacteria. I found it helped my little guys soooo much with his tummy troubles. You are doing great though, the first week is always the hardest!!

@youboots: Glad to hear everything is going well with T now. It's so stressful when you think your tiny baby is hungry.
