People always say breastmilk is best, but isn't this dependent on the individual mom's diet? Is it still best if the mom has a poor diet? I didn't always have time to eat very well while I was breastfeeding.

I don't really have the time to eat well because of my jobs and running a house and parenting a baby. I try my best, but I have dinosaur nugget and tater tot days.

I do. But everything in moderation--so some junk on occasion is allowed.

I'm on a pretty vast elimination diet so I generally eat pretty good.... My problem is eating enough & getting enough fat.
As for breastmilk & diet, your body will take nutrients from you to ensure breastmilk isn't lack. Pretty much you're the one that pays for not eating well or enough. That's also part of the reason you're supposed to continue taking your prenatal.

I had the same diet I always have. The occasional splurge, but most days I had a good amount of grains, proteins, fruits, and veggies. Plus I took vitamins, so I figured it helped, lol.

seems like if you eat like TOTAL crap, it's probably not that great But i think most breastfeeding moms eat pretty reasonable because the baby doesn't tolerate it well otherwise, right? I mean, everyone has crap eating days, but if you don't eat like that every day, no harm, no foul

I eat terribly! But I do try to eat semi-healthy when I can. Hard to do when I have to feed two kids now. Sometimes I eat while I'm preparing their food. I miss sitting down to eat.

Pretty sure the breastmilk will find what it needs from your body, so if you aren't eating healthy, your body will be robbed, not your baby.
I eat mixed. Maybe not as healthy as before baby. I eat healthy, and then I let myself eat desserts on top of that, which I never would before.

Mostly healthy with a peppering of splurges and treats. I could eat better I know that though.

@cvbee: yeah, just wondering what makes it into the breastmilk. Would be nice if it doesn't include the junk!

In making your breastmilk, your body takes what it needs. So if you eat a crummy diet, it's more your health that suffers. The flavor of the things you eat gets transmitted in your milk, which is pretty cool.

I wish I was a bit healthier in what I eat - I'm not an unhealthy eater per se but I'm definitely not a health nut either. I guess it's all in moderation. I have days where we have McDonald's for lunch or dinner, and then days when I eat nothing but whole grains, fruits, and veg. I'm sure it all balances out somehow.
