My MIL is visiting. I breastfeed in front of her with no problem. but pumping in front of her (or anyone besides my SO) seems weird and makes me feel uncomfortable.
Do you pump in front of other people?

pumping is weirder for sure. breastfeeding you can do very discreetly! i don't think i ever pumped in front of others.

No! Pumping was so awkward to me, and I found it totally impossible to be discreet, whereas with nursing, I did the up/down method with a tank top underneath and had almost nothing exposed while lol was nursing.

I never pumped in front of anyone other than DH. I BF in public all the time.
eggplant / 11861 posts
I haven't had to pump in front of anyone but DH I would have no problem in front of my Mom or sisters....
My MIL seems shy to me nursing so I wouldn't pump in front of her, but if she wasn't so shy I would

I EP'd for a year so yes, many family and friends have seen (or should I say heard) my pump. I always wore a cover.

Pumping is so weird in front of people! Even my husband lol. It's just awkward

I EP'd from 7 weeks until she was almost 8 months and would latch again. I pumped in front of family often. I would hook up my hands free bra and zip up and oversized goodie over the while setup and go about my business. I think I just reached a point where I couldn't care anymore!

I pumped in front of my mom, SIL and a few close friends but it's definitely more awkward.

I pumped in front of dh but no one else. I nursed in front of plenty of people though.

Feel like this was needed for those of you with family, friends, or coworkers who act (acted) any type of weird way about your pumping!

I only pumped in front of my parents, sister, DH - no in-laws or friends. I have a friend who exclusively pumped and she'd do it anywhere - she'd be pumping away at the dinner table. I think pumping makes my boobs look weird and puts me in an awkward posture/position. Breastfeeding is easier to do in public because the baby blocks everything!

I pump, in front of DH and my mom. I pump with a nursing cover in front of my dad and brother just because we live a couple hours apart and I don't want to waste time holed up, in a room while I could be visiting.
Never in front of my in-laws. SIL won't even nurse in front of the family, so I feel pressured not to as well.

I guess I'm the outlier but with all the time on the NICU I pumped wayyyy more in front of other people than I ever breastfed!
papaya / 10343 posts
I pumped in front of more people than I breastfed in front of. Breastfeeding was so hard and I couldn't do it discreetly, and it was easy to just pick up and leave the room. Plus she wouldn't nurse with a cover. With pumping I had all my stuff set up in the living room because I was pumping so often and I didn't want to haul everything upstairs. So I would leave the room and put on my hands free pumping bra with the flanges attached then pull my shirt down over it (yep looked weird) and then stand with my back to people to hook up to the pump, then I'd throw a blanket over my chest and sit down and pump away. No one saw anything (except my husband an mom. boobs out all the time. ain't nobody got time to cover up for them lol)

I only pumped in front of DH, my mom, and once two girl friends came in while I was pumping but I had a cover on.
I pumped in the backseat of the car while my inlaws were in front on a long road trip, and I've pumped on flights but only with DH and LO next to me, with me at the window, wearing a cover and being as discreet as possible. Pretty sure no one else knew I was pumping.

I only ever pumped infront of DH, my mom and one sister. I found it a little more awkward.
But I think if I EP'd I'd do it in front if more people.

I only pumped in front of my dh, mom and sister. I think it's weird since everything is exposed when you pump!

I pump in front of DH everyday. I also did it in front of my mom & my MIL but always hid behind my open laptop so they never saw anything. (needed something to focus on so I wasn't watching the output lol)

I flew with DD a couple times and she refused to nurse on the plane -- I think she didn't like the cramped, awkward positioning. So I had to pump and give bottles. The first time, I was really lucky I'd carried the pump on instead of packing it! The second time, I knew it was a distinct possibility so I made sure to be prepared for pumping on the plane. Aside from that, I usually pumped in private.

I didn't pump much, but I only ever did it in front of DH. For actual BF, I would do it in front of anyone, anywhere!

I BF anywhere and everywhere with no hesitation, but pumping I reserved for the privacy of my own room. Granted, I only had a manual pump and only pumped on the very odd occasion (maybe 20 times in my life from 27 months of BF'ing), so that was a big part of it; had I had to pump regularly, it may have been a different story....not sure.

I EPed and got used to pumping in front of lots of people. I wore a cover

Pumping in front of people is definitely more awkward and I feel more exposed doing it. But I've done it in front of Hubs, Xander, my parents, and my brother!

I pump often in front of DH, my mom or my sister. Around others I try to be more discreet but it doesn't really bother me. It's not like I would pump openly in public.

Only pumped in front of my mom, Dh, and one of my work bffs who joined me on my pumping break!

I pumped in front of my husband and also in the car on our way back from vacations because I was so engorged. Other than that, no. It's awkward.

I feel totally comfortable breastfeeding in front of others, but not pumping. My former employee had four mothers rooms, three needed to be booked and one was open for multiple people to use at once - to accommodate unpredictable schedules I think. I ended up using that one a lot and it always was a little strange - the chorus of pumps I will never forget - but everyone just focused on their own business. Other than that I've only pumped in front of DH.

Besides family I recently pumped in front of another coworker. We had an urgent mtg, she's a mom too, I asked if she cared, and just went for it. Gotta do what I gotta do!
I would nurse in front of anyone but with a cover since I suck at positioning. But I rarely NIP b/c we both just never seem to get comfortable!
pear / 1812 posts
No. If it were physically possible I ptob wouldn't even pump in front of myself! Lol. The machine is so annoying and it is just so weird and I really do feel like a dairy cow. Its also just so much of a hastle. Blugh... BF though? Totally don't care who is around.

@magnolia: I never nursed in front of my in-laws but did pump in front of them because I had to do it like 5-6 times a day. I just got hooked up and wore one of DH's huge zip-up hoodies over the top - but I have the Medela Freestyle so its portable and I can walk around with it. My FIL laughed about it because it sounded like I had a quacking duck under my sweater.

Oh man... I usually left the room to bf but pumped infront of anyone who was at my house. But. I used a hands free bra and had my shirt over the pump. Soooo I just looked/sounded weird. Nothing was visible. I think my FIL hated it.

@Mrs. Tiger: Me, too. D wasn't in the NICU, but I pumped in the NICU pumping lounge at work (employees were allowed to pump in there and use the hospital-grade pumps). I pumped in front of random strangers all the time. But I was very uncomfortable breastfeeding in public.

The lady at the front desk of my DS' daycare pumps. She has the nursing cover over her but she sometimes is standing up to greet people coming in the front door while hooked-up to the pump. You see the hoses coming out from under it. I don't pumping to me wasn't an easy task and I always had leaking going on. Just is odd to me.

@littlebug: oh I forgot the communal mothers room at work, that just further solidifies my side!
