If your baby was breech, did you go into labor on your own? If so, what was that like? I know most OB's schedule c-sections for 39 weeks to avoid labor...I would love to hear experiences of what happened if you didn't make it to your c-section date.

Not me personally, but I have a friend who had a breeched baby and went into early labor at 37 weeks. She was out of town (just 1.5 hours - her doctor had okayed it) and she labored all the way to 10 cms in the car. When she arrived at the hospital they checked her (said "oh my gosh you are 10 cms!!") and sent her straight to the operating room.

My first DS was breech and I had a scheduled C/S at 39+1 and never went into labor. A friend found out her DD was breech around 38 weeks and they scheduled a C/S... then her water broke later that night and labor started right away. She was contracting and very uncomfortable and when she got to the hospital they took her to the OR pretty quickly. (But she was still in labor and in pain for a couple of hours.)

I did. My c-section was scheduled for 39 weeks and my water broke at 38 weeks. I hadn't expected that to happen at all so I totally panicked but was able to get ahold of my husband and pack a bag. We went to the hospital, and because I was clearly not in any type of active labor, they just kept me in triage with a monitor. No one gave me a single cervical check and we waited for 9 hours for an OR to clear for my emergency c-section. It was actually kind of boring.
I have since heard from my OB and anectodally this is also true that your water is more likely to break and break earlier with a breach baby because they in an awkward position, but active labor is less likely to happen right away because they're not properly engaged in the pelvis. This would have been nice to know beforehand because I had never even considered the possibility that my baby could be born before the scheduled c-section at 39 weeks.

I did not go into labor, and I was so relieved! My doctor wanted me to call when contractions were 3-5 minutes apart and painful. I'm usually a very compliant patient, but I wouldn't have done that--I didn't want to labor that long just to go in for a c-section and be physically wiped out. I read/heard about benefits of going into labor before a c-section, but I didn't think it sounded worth it!

@Rockies11: This makes me feel a little better. I am completely terrified that I am going to go into labor and everything is going to happen too fast. I would much rather my water break and then I will know it's time to go to the hospital. I have had so many "preterm" symptoms and have been on watch since 30 weeks, that I am just so scared that I am not going to recognize the real thing.

LO 2 was breech and I made it to my RCS at 39 weeks with no signs of labor. I was very worried about it because DH worked a lot of overnight shifts from 35-38 weeks!
Good luck!

I did.
Baby was breech and they wanted to talk c section at my 37w appt. However, baby had other plans.
At 36+2 my water broke. I went straight to the hospital. I had zero contractions at that time.
Baby was born vaginally in the OR (because they attempted an emergency c section...) 2 hours after my water broke and 50 minutes after my first contraction.
I was lucky that the OB on call that night was an older guy who had experience delivering breech babies vaginally.

My little guy was breech. I didn't have a csection scheduled. I was still in denial and hoping he would flip. My water broke at 38 weeks in the middle of the night. I had one contraction (that was painful and could feel) during the few hours it took me to pack a bag and get to the hospital. For whatever reason I didn't feel like I should hurry even though when DH called labor & delivery the first thing they asked him was a foot or anything hanging out of me. Ridic. Anyways... Little guy was born via an unscheduled and uneventful (everything went fine and none of the drs seemed to worried about the breech thing) csection roughly five hours after my water broke.

@Mrs. Lion: My babe was stubbornly breech (I tried a bunch of stuff to turn him, nothing worked) so I knew I was going to have a c-sec. However it was really important to me that baby came out when he was ready, I really didn't like the idea of potentially pulling him out a few weeks before he was "ready". I convinced by OB to schedule the c-sec at 40 weeks. And then my water broke at 38! And in I went for my c-section.

@elchalten: Did you have a spinal block already?!? That is crazy!!
Sounds like most people go into labor with their water breaking. That's what happened to me with LO1 too. At least that way it is clear that it's time to get to the hospital! These contractions I am having are so confusing.

@Mrs. Lion: nope. Nothing. When I got to the hospital they only did an external exam and the nurse thought the baby had turned and was no longer breech. So they put me in s monitor and as soon as the contractions started I told her I had the urge to push. She pretty much laughed at me. When I kept insisting she finally checked down low and one foot was already out.
That is when every body started running around and an emergency c section was supposed to come up next. However when they rolled me into the OR and tried to put the IV baby dropped even more and the OB decided to let me birth vaginally.
She was out within 3 pushes.
So all in all, a breech delivery was not what I wanted but it turned out to be a great birth experience.

@elchalten: Amazing story!
My second baby was breech, but she flipped sometime around 36 weeks, right as we were starting to talk ECV and C-section scheduling, so even though I was induced, she was born vaginally.

I made it to my c-section at 40+1 without going into labour. Not even a single contraction.

My water broke and my placenta abrupted during my external cephalic version at 37 weeks exactly. The ECV was actually successful in that baby did flip to head-down, but of course the abrupted placenta was an emergency. I insisted on laboring for a while to see if I could deliver vaginally (as that had been the whole point to the blasted ECV!) but as the bleeding got heavier and I passed a huge clot it looked like my health might be in danger and labor wasn't progressing at all. Even though she had turned during the ECV her head wasn't engaged in the pelvis at all and my contractions were super sporadic and probably caused more by the water having broken and the irritation of all the blood from the abruption. So I had an emergency c-section but all ended well. She was 7.5 lbs even at 37 weeks and would have been a big girl if she'd baked til her due date!
It is so interesting to read here that breech babies your water is more likely to break before your due date--it's a wonder everyone's water doesn't break during an ECV! My docs said they'd never personally had that happen in their many years of experience doing ECVs.

I had a breech baby for my second one... I was scheduled c-section at 39 weeks. My story is more complex but I did have a c-section at 39 weeks.
I do remember my OB and other doctors telling me that I needed to come in if I even had an inkling of labor because of the way my LO was breeched. He was transverse breech (some think of it hamock style) which meant nothing was in my cervix. So if I went into labor and stuff got sucked into my cervix ... that is not a butt or head... aka the cord that would be bad news bears and they wanted to prevent that.
