My son loves making these creations out of paper he cuts up and tape. I feel like there had got to be a better type of building material for him that would ideally be safe and reusable. We already have legos, magnatiles and play dough. Has anyone else seen something that they think might fit the bill?

Hmmm...what about wiki stiks and K'nex (both very different!). Also, what abiut playing with modeling clay and popsicle sticks?

@SweetCaroline: woah, I just looked at wiki sticks for the first time really and people make some really creative things with them! We’ve gotten tiny packs as birthday favors before so I was familiar with the concept, but people get really creative with lots of them!

I've tried.....mine keeps going back to Amazon boxes and tape......He wants to save everything for crafts. Empty apple juice bottle? Crafts! Piece of foam insulation leftover from a home project? Crafts! All the toilet paper rolls? Crafts! Things actually that are supposed to be used for crafts that are sustainable and reusable? Meh.
The plus side is that he asks for things like duct tape for gifts.....

@Mama Bird: @theotherstark: @Mommy Finger: haha same here! Every piece of trash is fair game. We got some towels recently that had a stretchy ribbon as part of the packaging. Oh the joy! I guess that partially offsets all the trees were killing with his paper projects

Thanks everyone! Now my kids' xmas lists and wishlists for grandparents are filled out and I probably have ideas for their birthdays too! These all look so fun

My kids have three sets of this and make alll kinds of things.. we also have legos and magnatiles and these hand down are their favorite.

Oh man this is all 3 of my kids too. We go through SO MUCH TAPE. And heaven forbid if you throw away an empty toilet paper roll. Other recyclables to save: bottle caps, plastic lids like from water bottles or PB jars (makes good wheels). Adding use of a stapler. And my kids are about old enough to use a hot glue gun relatively safely so I'll be buying hot glue sticks in bulk soon as well.
