Bum Genius 4.0 comes with a removable thin and thick insert, which can be used separately or together based on absorbancy needs.
Freetimes has the thick and thin inserts partially attached. The online description states the inserts "allow for customized absorbancy". How, if Freetimes' claim to fame is the attached inserts unlike the 4.0 stuffing?
Also, did you find the cut of the 4.0 or Freetimes in the way or uncomfortable for your infant's umbilical area?

Can't speak to the second q, but you customize the Freetime by the particular way you fold the attached inserts, if that makes sense.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I have both and neither fit my baby until he without leaks until he was over 1.5 months. I've never messed with the free time flaps I just fold them over!

@mrs. yoyo - I assumed the Freetimes were customizable by being able to add another insert under the flaps - usually AIOs don't have a place to do that. I didn't even think to fold the flaps ...

I don't know anything about freetimes, but do appreciate the customizable factor with my 4.0s. I fold my inserts differently for dd and ds, and use some combo of 3 different inserts for overnights, outings, etc. And the pocket keeps all the folds and layers in place and tidy (moreso than my flips, which just fold and lay in the shell).
But I think newborn cloth diapers are recommended (or were rec to me at least) for when they are very small. They have a scooped waist in front so they don't abrade the umbilical area. I think they probably have a better fit overall too vs a one size like the bumgenius.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Having twins, we actually just opted for disposables early on, and I don't remember what the CD store recommended. But I know others on here have mentioned newborn rentals because of the cost investment to purchase vs. short time used. Overall, it's going to depend on how often you can/want to do laundry. Newborns go through a LOT of diapers, and you're changing them overnight too - I think we used like a dozen a day for the first month or so. So you'd probably need 12-15 with nearly daily laundry? If you're planning to have multiple kids, it's not quite as cost prohibitive. But I think that's the reason many use disposables or a rental until their kids fit a one size diaper well, so you only have to buy one stash

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Our LO could wear the Freetimes as a newborn without it touching the umbilical stump, but we didn't start using them until she was a month old b/c her legs were a little too skinny and the diapers seemed so massive. She is a big baby though--9.5 lbs at birth, around 12 lbs now at 5 weeks. If your baby is smaller/has a short torso, you might do better in newborn CDs. For us it would have been a waste since LO was so big! We just used disposables for the first few weeks and it was nice to not have that extra CD laundry yet!

@Mrs. Yoyo: I never thought to fold the flaps to customize the fit! We've always just laid one over the other, but have been seriously been struggling with leaks almost every diaper. I'll have to try folding them and see if that fixes our issue.
