So my mom asked me tonight what is the in thing ( funny seeing how I don't have kids and my brother has 3!)
My SIL used bumper pads for all 3 ( youngest is 6.5 months old), all 3 slept on their bellies from a few months on, and they sleep with warm blankets.
So my mom asked me if that is the in thing now? I didn't know how to answer? I said I think bumper pads are thought to be somewhat unsafe but they still sell them so people must still use them. I didn't have an answer on sleeping position or blankets.

No bumper pads, no blankets until a year, back is best. Lots of people use sleep sacks.

@NurseMommy: That's what we're doing, too. Our daycare's SIDS training makes it so they only place your baby to sleep on their back on the mattress with only a fitted sheet. We'll do the same at home so the transition is easier.

Agree with previous.
My MIL was gung-ho about bumper pads. She wanted to make one for us and I said no way. She made one for my nephew and put it in the crib at her house because she babysat him once a week when he was an infant. One day she found him wedged under the bumper with his face against the bumper pad. Fortunately he was fine, but that could have gone very wrong very fast.

MIL made bumper pads and a frilly skirt for an old heirloom bassinet. It was a nice gesture, and it's what her mother had done for her grandkids, but the whole get-up is far from what's now considered safe. But I just graciously thanked her since it seemed to mean a lot to her. I figured it's a gamble that DD would want to sleep in it anyway, plus we already had a crib and a pack-n-play. Turned out DD hated it, but we got a few pictures in
Later, I discovered that not everyone used the bassinet - contrary to what I was told. If I had known that earlier, I would have just said no. I would have save myself time and money trying to find sheets and a mattress for that thing.

Ditto to others. However, we did use bumper pads for a little while (once she started rolling she legit got stuck so we used them for a few weeks) and we did belly sleeping from a really early age. Worked for us and our baby.

our baby sleeps in her Snug-a-Bunny swing... but our Ped. told us that we can use a light blanket like a receiving blanket, nothing heavy.... bumper pads and pillows are out... especially once LO starts rolling around. If they don't come in contact with the bumper pads (newborns don't really move...) then it's mostly ok-- you just need to remove them when your LO gets to that stage.
We will use one of the breathable mesh ones instead of the padded ones so we can leave them longer
As far a sleeping positions-- you're supposed to put them on their backs- but they do sell special baby monitor pads for belly sleepers... I personally think if you put them on their side and have rolled up receiving blankets to place on either side of them, so they can't move (put it lower in relation to their body so it's not by their face of course) it's safe for nap times etc-- this is what my mom did for us as she felt it was less of a risk of choking on spit-up than having us on our back

I have used bumper pads for all three LO's the youngest being 8 months old. She also has always slept with some form of blanket and due to her reflux still sleeps in a Boppy Pillow.
My oldest slept on her stomach. My middle one also slept with a boppy pillow.
Be smart and do what works for your family and your child.I've never been the mommy that jumps on all bandwagons or immediately changes what works just because someone says I should. I do my research and weigh it with my own child's needs.

@Crisark: not to mention the rules change so much! My mother in law said when her boys were younger they always said tummy was best to avoid SIDS now it's back...

I have had bumper pads and a blanket made for T's crib to match his nursery but I won't actually be using them until he is older...maybe about a year or so. They're just there for looks now...since he will be sleeping in our room for the first few months. When he does transition into his crib we will take them off.

@Mrs. Pink: Exactly! No one knows what causes SIDS which is why all of the recommendations change constantly about how to avoid it.
I believe it's common sense more than anything IMO. -
No bumper pads, no blankets till at least one year, and back sleep until baby is old enough to roll in both directions. Even at 15 months old, we still use a sleep sack in lieu of a blanket.

We used bumpers until she started pulling up. She used to bang her legs and arms on the crib something fierce, so I'm glad we did.
She started using a blanket at 10 months (we were going to wait, but it got really cold). We always put her down on her back.
