Anyone else get bumps on the back of their upper arms? It's finally warm out so of course now I notice them. They're not zits and aren't itchy. I don't know what they are but I want them gone!

I have it and it drives me insane. It's called keratosis pilaris and it's caused by dry skin clogging pores. There are all kinds of "remedies" out there, but nothing works for me : (. I've only had it the past 5 years or so and I'm so over it! My doc prescribed a lotion with lactic acid in it...but I haven't tried it yet since it's not proven safe for breastfeeding.

@LindsayInNYC: Yup it's called keratosis pilaris. Not much you can do about it except exfoliate and use AmLactin (lactic acid) lotion. It sucks!

I believe it's called Keratosis Pilaris. It's an overproduction of keratin (what helps make the natural oil for your hair).
Moisturising helps a lot!
I've found that ex-foliating helps, although I believe it's recommended not to do.
Tanning also helps, I've found.

@.twist.: So that might explain my oily hair too?? Well, when it's not washed. I moisturize but maybe I'm not using the right product? I'll have to start googling...

@LindsayInNYC: haha maybe!? I know that I have really oily hair as well.
I've found that regular lotions don't work. Body butters (things that stay on your skin for a long time and don't get soaked up easily) work best.

Yup! It's KP! I have it on my arms and thighs, and it sucks! I get so embarassed by them during the warmer months because they get so inflammed. Deep exfoliation helps unclog the pores, and my dermatologist prescribed this cream that dispenses from an aerasol can that works wonders(can't remember name), but I quit using once I got my BFP. I heard coconut oil helps also, along with some good ole sun!

@Alivoo01: they totally embarrass me too. To the point, before I knew what they were, that I would NEVER wear shorts or skirts.
I don't care as much now, but I know it's common and I have it a "little" better under control...

ugh, I have it too, I hate my bare arms.
In her recent "Beauty" book, I learned that Lauren Conrad also suffers from KP! - and uses body makeup to hide it.

@.twist.: I just read something that recommended coconut oil! Might have to try that...

I also have it on my upper arms and thighs. DH has it too! They go down a little if I exfoliate and moisturise daily but it never goes away. So annoying.

I had this growing up...I also had severe acne that was treated with Accutane. The Accutane cleared up my acne and the KP. My LO has it on her arms and legs...makes me sad but it doesn't bother her. Her pediatrician said it's purely cosmetic so it's better not to start any prescription creams at this age. I am subscribing to this thread though in case anyone has found some home remedies that have helped.

We use a uric acid lotion on my toddler's face. He has KP on his cheeks. It helps quite a bit.

@sloaneandpuffy: what brand? Where do you buy it? I would love to find an OTC product that would help.

I have it. I have a clarisonic body brush that really helps it. Then, I moisturize like crazy.

I have some too. Going out in the sun really helps mine. I hardly notice it in the summer.

I have it, but it doesn't bother me because it's on the back of my arms and I can't see it.

@sandy: it's called Ureadin RX 20 (or 30, which is stronger). I live in Mexico so I'm not sure if it's OTC or even available elsewhere. We buy it at the pharmacy or even in the "nice" Wal-mart in our area.
I think Eucerin Plus also has uric acid so maybe try that?
It's interesting so many people say the sun helps. Our dermatologist has told us to avoid burns on our son's face like the plague. Maybe it's one of those "short term improvement, long term cost" things?

Ugh.. I've had KP my whole life & it blows. I never let it keep me from wearing short sleeves or tanks (it gets too hot here), but I've always been self conscious about it. I've tried everything, but nothing has worked. It's less noticeable when I'm tan, but I'm hardly ever tan... ha.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@sloaneandpuffy: the sun doesn't make mine go away & it just makes it less noticeable.

Yep, same here. I've had it FOREVER. It was one of the main reasons I started indoor tanning back in the day...booo!! I hate it, but nothing really does much for it, so...meh.

@Alivoo01: hey could you perhaps find out what the spray you were using for KP is called? Or is it too hard to find out?
I've had KP on my arms and thighs my whole life and growing up I was completely embarrassed. Like @twist: I would never wear shorts or skirts growing up. I've since changed my ways but I still hate it. I've never been able to find a good cream that helps. I have super dry skin so I always moisturizer but I've never found anything to get rid of the red bumps

I have them on my upper arms and like @Mrs Green Grass not much helps them unfortunately. I've had them forever, though, so I pretty much just ignore it. One thing that has helped a little is using L'Occitane almond shower oil probably because its do moisturizing. I love the stuff!

Looks like you got your answers. It does get better as you get older (small consolation, I know)!

@Alivoo01: oh awesome thanks so much. I'll look into it. Did your doc say you had to stop when PG or did you just feel that was a good idea?
pineapple / 12526 posts
Yep, since I hit puberty on my arms and thighs. It cleared a bit during pregnancy but got worse after. Nothing has really helped.

@LindsayInNY: I have had this for years and I hate it so much
I had a prescription lotion from a dermatologist once but it was super greasy, smelled awful, was $$$, and didn't 100% fix the problem.
I just moisturize a lot, exfoliate a little, and wear a lot of 3/4 sleeve shirts.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@delight: I just stopped using it on my own. With my insurance, the foam was still $50 (ouch!), but I really liked it as it wasn't greasy and helped out a lot.
pomelo / 5326 posts
@Alivoo01: I looked it up and they aren't sure of the affects on PG or nursing mothers. So I'll wait to use it, but will definitely keep it in mind!

I've had that my whole life and I have never seemed to be able to get rid of them.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@pui: My dermatologist said it never goes away. Super sad face. She said we can do things to help manage it/keep it at bay, but the moment we stop, they'll come right back in full force. Sigh.

Ironically, a week outside with a little sun exposure seems to have helped a lot! Not sure what causes the "flare up," if you will, though.
pear / 1571 posts
Yep, I've had it as long as I can remember, since I was a little kid. It faded some as I matured, but I've really noticed a huge difference since I've gone gluten-free. As soon as I gluten myself again, it flares up until that's out of my system. It wasn't until after I'd been GF for quite awhile that I read that KP can be a symptom of gluten sensitivity and everything just clicked and I've really started noticing the correlation for me.
