My LO wants to go on the Kid's Baking Championship on Food Network. She's 4 and too young but she wants to learn how to bake. We are moving soon to an apartment with an updated kitchen and she wants a Kitchenaid mixer so we can bake together. Um no. I had no idea they were so pricy!
Does anyone have a cute mixer that is not a Kitchenaid? LO has requested purple but anything colorful and cheaper (much cheaper) will work.

What is your budget? A hand mixer is often way less expensive and less bulky.

A KitchenAid will last you a lifetime! I bake a lot and it's all I use -- I haven't used a handheld mixer in years. Plus the stand mixers are way easier for kids to use -- my 2 year old bakes with me 
Maybe keep your eye out for a sale? I got mine when I worked in retail for 40% off (employee discount).

My mom has a Sunbeam stand mixer, and it works reasonably well (she uses it like, twice a year though, so I can't speak to durability.) If you do decode to eventually get a kitchen-aid, I got mine for super cheap at Kohls. It was in clearance, but Kohls let's you combine coupons and kohls cash. Our was marked $170 plus we had a 15% off coupon, and another coupon, and we got kohls cash for buying it.

@mrsjazz: I've definitely seen Kitchenaids marked down a ton to the $150 range. You just have to find the right sale and coupons. I got mine at Kohls. I've also seen them at places like Tuesday Morning (clearance stores).

I had a really old SunBeam from my grandma and I think it still works! Its not a bad brand at all.
If they are like half the price of a KitchenAid I would go that route, but the KA is probably the better brand.
Also check used sites like craigslist.

For what it's worth my parents got me a kitchen aid mixer for Christmas when I was 12 and I'm still using it 20 years later! Fully understand 4 is not 12 though 
I wonder if you could find one used? I don't know much of anything about other brands...

You can find refurbished KitchenAids for super cheap ($150ish)! They used to sell them in a mall store near me, but it unfortunately shut down. I have also seen great deals on them on Amazon and Target near holidays.

My mom has her original kitchen aid, it's older than I am and still works great.
The great thing about KA is the attachments. I have the meat grinder and I just bought the spiralizer. You can also get a shredder that makes it function similar to a food processor!

@looch: Oh yeah! We have the ice cream attachment and meat grinder! I'll have to check out the spiralizer, I didn't know they made that.

OMG I am pretty sure I would never use the spiralizer, but I looked up some photos and it looks like so much fun!
My gadget-obsessed husband insisted on the KitchenAid with the upgraded motor. He mostly uses it for making pasta -- we have the pasta attachment -- and I mostly use it for making cookies. I am not convinced we use it often enough to justify the price and the amount of space it takes in our pantry. I am just glad we have someplace to store it other than our kitchen counter.
OP, sorry but I haven't researched other mixers so not sure what to recommend. My mom had a less schmancy one when I was growing up, and it was just fine for standard baking projects.

I'll be the dissenter and say you should be fine with any stand mixer for your purposes. I have a kitchen aid that we received as a wedding present, and while I'm glad to have it, I'm not a serious baker/cook and definitely don't "need" it. The sunbeam others mentioned would probably be just fine!

@looch: @NorCalWayfarer: @ElbieKay: Attachments sound great but I'm never going to make my own pasta or grind my own meat. I do already have a spiralizer that gets frequent use. But the KA does sound great. Too bad I didn't think about one when we were registering for our wedding.
@Jennibenni: Yeah I think we are going with the Sunbeam unless a great deal comes up on KA between now and when we move in July.
I showed LO the Sunbeam mixers last night and she was excited to choose the pink color. Her goal is to learn how to make cupcakes so she can make them for her 5th birthday party.

@mrsjazz: well this is timely! I just got an email in my inbox about the Kitchenaid mini. For sale starting in June. The msrp is still pretty high but sure what the "street" price will be though.

@sunny: it says it will retail for $400!!!!! Because it has the same motor in a smaller profile.
I actually ended up buying the pink (her choice) Sunbeam mixer last night because the price went from $89 to $64 and camel camel camel showed that as the lowest price it's ever been.
