My birthday is coming up and I want to ask for a good camera as a pooled gift from the whole family... I'm thinking dslr, or at least not a plain old digital camera. I don't have a lot of spare time to learn how to use it, so something VERY user friendly is ideal... Do you have/know of a camera like this that takes beautiful pictures??

Here's the thing, unless you are going to take the time to learn how to use it on manual setting and invest in other lenes then a DSLR isn't really necessary. There are some wonderful point and shoot cameras that take really awesome photos. I'm a big fan of Canon. The canon elph line is good, but the powershot line is just as nice.

It is a point and shoot but it still has the manual options. This way you can learn how to use the camera without spending a ton.

A nice point and shoot will take pictures that will look as good or better straight out of the camera than a dslr with kit lens will if you refuse to learn how to use it. Don't waste your money if you don't have a real desire to learn the ins and outs of manual photography. Also consider size. dslrs are no joke to carry around. If you want something that you can have with you all the time, go for a point and shoot.

I have the perfect camera for you!! Seriously, this one is awesome. It's a point-and-shoot, but takes amazing photos, including low-light photos without a flash. Sony DSC-RX100 - my photographer friends love it too, and they are DSLR people.

My hubby got me a micro 4/3rds camera for Christmas last year. It's basically a DSLR in a smaller package, so it eliminates the "too heavy and bulky to take anywhere" issue. I toss it in the diaper bag all the time. I love it, but sometimes I think I took better photos with the Panasonic! I am also craving a new lens to get some better portraits of our little one. The kit lens is fine but not completely ideal for low light/fast movement or nice bokeh in close up portraits. Anyway, I'd recommend checking out micro 4/3rds if you think you want to learn how to use all the manual settings on your camera but you don't want a big bulky DSLR.
