@Bao: Hahahaha your response cracked me up.
There are some relatively affordable ones in cottage country around here (and the northern parts of Ontario).. BUT .. building and cargo shipping supplies over..etc.. would not only be a PITA but hella expensive..
So we could buy one.. but I would have to swim to it and camp out

@rahlyrah: lol!
We were watching the other night when they were buying an island in the Florida Keys for 5-10 million. I didn't even think they were that nice!

No!!
HGTV irritates me because most of the prices are WAY lower than I think the reality is... And some of the people they show with their 150k budgets saying 3000 square feet is "too small" for two people? I know it's just where I live but I want to smack them!

@googly-eyes: no, I get really annoyed when people are able to buy brand new, luxurious houses with a $200,000 budget. That would buy you a fixer upper in a bad school district around here.

Lol! DH and I watched that show a couple weeks ago. There's no way. I don't even think I'd want to! DH probably would if he could though.

I was watching that show today and asked DH "Who ARE these people that can afford to buy islands??". He said actors - I was like, umm not these people. I don't know anyone IRL who owns an island!

I think some islands are actually pretty inexpensive if in a remote location. Then though you would need to worry about building a road to it or getting a helicopter to get to it. After that you'd need to figure out electricity and gas and everything else, nevermind getting people to bring supplies and build a house way out there. Doesn't seem very practical lol.

I watched an episode of that show, but the people seemed to be buying an island to run as a resort, and their own living quarters were actually going to be quite modest above the dining hall where they'd be cooking all the meals for the paying guests. That's probably about the only way I could afford it with a big fat business loan.
I think the one they actually bought was this one:
