A little of both, but I can't make anything complicated without a recipe.

A bit of both, except with baking. I'm a total baking newb, so I tend to stick to the recipe.

I am a recipe follower with very occasional modifications. I'm definitely still learning!

I do both, but when I use a recipe I pretty much always tweak it to my own preference.

I just follow recipes! So not a good cook. There was a cookbook I saw once and have been meaning to get, called "The Flavor Bible" - I think the gist was that it basically tells you what combinations of flavors go together well so you can cook without formal recipes.

Both. Lots of times I take recipes and say, "gee, that black bean curry looks good. Only I don't want the beans. Or the *insert other key ingredient here.*" And I end up making something different but also yummy. And sometimes I just don't follow a recipe at all. I'm big on using a scale when I cook, and I've got a whole slew of ingredient weights memorized (i.e. one cup of onions is 5.25 oz. A cup of all purpose flour is 4.25 oz. A cup of sugar is 7 oz) which is nice for measuring and adapting recipes. Or just making your own.

I like your definition cause I always pretty loosely follow recipes... Now I can say its because I "cook" not bc I'm lazy and not a good direction taker

Follow recipes. After I've made it a few times MAYBE I mess with it. I hate cooking.
Husband is a chef so while he loves to find and follow new recipes, he's much more able to improvise and throw stuff together.
