I can definitely tell the difference between LO 2's frantic "there is no way I am napping today" and her soft "I just need to whimper for a little bit before I fall asleep" type cry.

No, I can't tell the difference, I've never been able to!! Which is one if the reasons I could never sleep train!

Not like "hungry" vs "sleepy" vs "whatever" but I know a full out desperate cry that needs ASAP attention and an "I'm bored come get me" whine.

I can, DH can't. Drives me nuts. He thinks I'm negligent when I say she's working it out. I wish he could hear the difference.
FTR: I'm not negligent, just 32 weeks pregnant and not about to run up the stairs for every peep.

Yes. There is one that will get me running and most others I can just ignore or go at my own pace to her.

@Danizaur: same.
At 11 weeks I can also differentiate his "you hurt me" cry.

Oh yes. There's a huge difference in their different cries. I can usually tell I'm hungry vs I'm tired too, which mystifies DH! He thinks every noise means they are hungry!

Nope with either son. I can tell I'm hurt or really upset cry. But other than that they all sound the same to me. But I guess I never took the time to figure it out? I'm not good at letting them cry. They cry, I tend to them.

OH yes, there's several times I've said "oh come on that's fake" and she stops. She has a real distressed cry where I know she wont' fall asleep and a whiney cry that says "I'm so tired but don't' want to fall asleep but can't help it." that one I can let go. She has a difference from a "boo boo" cry where she just needs some love and a "that really hurt" cry where she needs to be checked over for a cut/bump/bruise/ect in addition to some love.
