My SIL's LC says she needs to cut back on feedings because her LO is six weeks and over 10 lbs. I think she nurses every 2-3 hours. Did you cut back on feedings around that time or weight?
I don't remember what guidelines I followed!

I fed her on demand at 4 days. If she was hungry, I fed her, if she wasn't I didn't. I don't know that they have the mental capacity to over eat at such a young age. But maybe I was just lucky.

I fed when my babies were hungry. If they ate too much they spit up. Babies are terrific at regulating their own intake. I wouldn't try to game the system!

I'm definitely in the camp of demand feeding and the LLL recommend 10-12 feedings for newborns to help establish supply! Having said that, Miss A did have a tendency to overeat so I only ever fed one side at a time.

My doc had a hunch that M was over eating and that was contributing to her spit up issues. So I asked if I should start limiting her eating and he gave that a big no. He said he'd much rather she eat too much and spit a little up than for her to not get enough to eat!

I've never heard of an LC saying that a mom can overfeed her baby while breastfeeding.... I was always told they know when they are full. If the baby is big, O would assume it needs more food than a smaller baby.

I think you can overfeed a newborn if you're bottle feeding or formula feeding. I think breastfed babies are much less likely to be overfed.

10lbs at 6 weeks doesn't seem like that much to me - I was born at almost that weight!
I just echo everything @Mrs. Jacks said!

C was FF and I still fed on demand. You CAN overfeed them, but generally you'll know it because it comes back up in a fountain.
I so call BS on that midwife.

I feed her when she is hungry. How can you make a baby diet??

Um, my LO is two weeks and weighs 10 pounds. So... it can't be that big for a 6 week old.

When I had my baby - both my mother and grandmother stayed with me for the first few months. I thought they were over feeding the baby because he would spit up a lot when they were feeding him. Also when he pushed the bottle away my grandmother still forced it on him because she wanted him to finish all his milk.
I asked the doc about this and he said it should be fine, you can't over feed a baby and spitting up was a good sign. He was asian just like me and told me sometimes you have to pick your battles but for right now just let your grandmother feed the baby how she wants.
For every appointment so far (he just had his 1 year appointment) he has been in the 50% for weight.
So I believe you can't overfeed a baby.

Thanks, I will call her right now! She was really worried that she is doing something wrong.

@zippylef: what she said.
I'm pretty sure my baby was a lot bigger than that at 6 weeks!

Agree with pp. I do remember that once LO hit a certain weight (can't remember what it was), we were allowed to stop waking him up at night to feed (I had low supply and he wasn't gaining weight so we and the ped were concerned but that's clearly not an issue here!). I also think that just because the baby fusses doesn't mean he's hungry - so if LO's waking up every 2 hours in the night, for example, she could try other soothing methods first before going straight to feeding.

My babe was ten at birth, by your SIL's LC rational should I have not fed her?
Can't overfeed a breastfed baby. Formula, yes....boob, no.

My LO was formula fed but she still spit out the bottle every time she was done. She always told us when she was full.

I've always been told you can't overfeed a breastfed baby! Our prenatal instructor really emphasized this.

I've been wondering this as I read an article about how you CAN over feed a baby despite all the info about it's impossible to over feed a BF baby. Found I because I was looking into reflux and spitting up. As a newbie mom, it's so easy for me to just try to feed her with the boob when she's crying and diapers and burping don't calm her down. I keep second guessing myself if I am over feeding her and that's causing the spitting up? But I just don't know. Almost everything says it is impossible, but then there are those few randoms that say it is possible.

Agree with what @ladyfingers: said.
At 6 weeks me LO was 11lbs and feeding every 3-4 hrs. She is still nursing that often at 10 weeks.

The only reason we knew in the early months that DS (EBF) was being "overfed" was because of his frothy green poops. It was more than he wasn't getting hind milk, we block fed for a day or two and he was back to normal.
At 20 weeks, he takes in 25-30 oz a day and eats every 3 hours like clockwork (he does not night feed, STTN 7-6)
