We had a scare on mother's day. I was upstairs taking a showering as my husband was preparing to take the kids out to walk the dog. Apparently, my daughter didn't want to go so my husband thought she was going to go upstairs to look for me. Instead, she put her shoes on and went outside. She walked about half a block before someone pulled over to see if she was okay. I came down as the nice lady was bringing her back to the house. She has gone out before so I usually keep the chain lock on now. My husband forgets sometimes. Now, we've also set up our alarm system to alert us each time the front door opens.

Oh man, that is super scary!! We aren't at that point, yet, but I do want to be prepared soon for when my son could be able to do something like that. How old is your daughter? That's great that you have an alarm to alert you now!

scary! glad she was ok. the kids can't open our front door. it's really hard to open. but charlie would constantly open the front door at my parents' house!

@Jenn23: She's turning 3 in july. She's just very reckless. We never had to worry about anything like that with my son. I have a feeling she'll be giving us a lot of trouble during her teenage years.

That's so frighting! I just discovered yesterday that DD can reach the backyard door handle. She accidentally locked me out! Thank goodness I left the front door open.

Yup, he has been able to do it since before he turned two. He could even get the key in the door and turn it.

Yes! in our new house (not baby proofed) he kept opening the door (he didn't go out but he let the dogs out). So we will be putting a child lock on the front door (back doors are contained so no problem there). Of course that hugely concerns me because he can't get out if there is an emergency. It is such a difficult line to walk.

J can unlock and open the glass door (on the outside) but not the main door. It's hard to open so I'm not worried yet but he's already started rolling toys to it and unlocking it. I should put the chain that I bought on it soon just to be safe. -
@SugarplumsMom: ah, yes the first time she went out, she locked herself out because the door can be self locking.
@brownie: oh that's true. I didn't think about in case of emergencies and she needs to get out. Is that something we should be considering? Whether or not the child can let himself out in an emergency? Our alarm system will not instantly send us a text/email whenever the front door opens so I think that's a good precautionary option.
@Mrsjets: yeah, the first time she let herself out. I also discovered that she tried the side door first (that's the door we mostly use). She carried over her little chair to reach the lock. Luckily, that lock is too heavy for her to unlock.

Yes, our 14 month old can open all of the doors so we HAVE to keep them dead-bolted. He hasn't figured that out, thank god. That is really scary for you. I'm glad it was just a scare, though!
