DS started to read around 4.5

DD is 5 and cannot read - she starts K this fall

5.5 and no reading yet. He's really not interested in learning it, which is the part that worries me, not that he can't read yet.

I am hoping when he's in kindergarten and it's what all the other kids are doing, he'll start to be interested.

No reading yet at a few months shy of four. I think I started reading right around 4.5. I don't really have expectations for her to read u til at least kindergarten

Three years old, not yet. He does know all of his letters and can point them out, and spell out words that he sees, but doesn't know what they say. They had been working on letters this year in school. He can write his name now except he has trouble with the letter K

@travellingbee: yeah it was really weird--we were at a playdate and he brought over a book and said he wanted to read it. I assumed he wanted me to read it to him but then he opened it up and started reading it to me!

She's 2.5, so no. But she can "read" her name

LO loves words. I definitely think it is one of her strengths. Before 1, we put a bunch of books on the ground and called out the first line and she would crawl to the correct book. It was pretty awesome and I have it on video. At 3, she was reading a sentence here and there. Right when she turned 4, she was reading easy readers but I help her here and there. At 5 1/2 she is definitely a reader and she loves joke books. I'm pretty sure she will read chapter books by the end of kindergarten.

DD turned 5 in January, and can read short words and simple sentences. She'll be going to Kinder this fall.

I'm a K-2 literacy coach, so it's fascinating for me to watch my own children go through the learning to read process.

Dd1 is not quite 3 yet so obviously she can't read words, but she is starting to read the pictures, string together her own stories, retell familiar books, notice print features and read environmental print. I love watching it all unfold!

My oldest just turned 5 and isn't reading. She has some sight words and is getting better at sounding words out to figure out what they are but she's not that into it. She likes being read to and hearing stories. She sometimes seems better and more interested in spelling than reading and is more of a doer so I try to point out signs when we're out and about. She's more willing to try then then in a story.

My 2.5 year old is much more of a word girl. She's not reading but picks up sight words decently well already.

DS is 3.5 and starting to sound out words. Language is definitely his strong point (motor skills not so much).

@irene: sounds very similar to my LO. For some kids reading is a spontaneous process - they don't rely on the phonics so heavily and you almost can't explain how they just figure out all the words on the page so quickly - they just do. Just like some kids just have amazing hand-eye coordination and can shoot baskets at a young age or throw a football across a field or hit a baseball naturally without any effort or lessons.

Yes, but she's still not what I would call fluent: able to pick up and read a chapter book with ease. She has been recognizing shorter words by sight since before 3, and she can sound out any word, and her vocabulary of words she recognizes by sight is ever-increasing, but she gets impatient after reading a few pages, unless it's an easy book like a Bob book. I don't push it, she's only 4.

My nearly 4 year old can't read - she recognizes her own name, a handful of letters, and not much else. But the way she and her newly 2 year old sister love to memorize and recite books, they could convince someone who didn't know better they are both excellent readers!

First, I don't think early reading means anything besides a big interest in letters/words, etc. and my LO is advanced in this area but much slower at gross motor...

3.5 - has about 30 sight words (all from reading/natural environment...never testing or flash cards!!), can guess words based on initial sounds, but also notices later sounds, but is definitely still guessing the word based on those parts. He has knowncapital and lower case letters for probably a year. (Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!)

Before recognizing words in books he would recognize signs which is a great start to symbols represent ting something. For us it was firstTarget and Homegoods .

As an English teacher I love that he loves to read and loves words! Bedtime often includes him asking what word starts with D or whatever and then we go back and forth naming words. We've always form a ton of letter play just in our daily talk (nonsense words, rhyming words, words that start with a certain letter) and he enjoys it all. Also Wallykazam and Storybots (app) are great word related shows/videos.

@catlady: so I believe he was actually reading, because I have also seen him read sentences that were new to him (i.e. the daily schedule listed outside the classroom door). Also, this was like a 40 page chapter book so I guess even if he did memorize it, that would be super impressive as well!
