LO 1 (3.5) had a phase when she did the buckling and unbuckling by herself but she doesn't like doing it anymore!

DD is 2.5. She gets in and out of car seat on her own and does the chest buckle and I do the one below.

DS is 2 and I've always put and took him in/out of his car seat. I guess he could get in by himself easily. He can't get out easily though. We're still RF so his seat is on a recline. He'll lean forward to help me get him out.
He also knows how to snap the chest clip together, but not with him in the chair. He can't quite line up the two pieces yet to snap them together. He knows how the crotch piece works also, but never attempts to do it.

We're teaching our 17 month old to climb in the seat. He loves doing it because he's becoming a daredevil and then he's much happier getting buckled in because he got in by himself. He obviously can't do the buckling yet, though.

I can barely buckle in my toddler--the mechanism is so hard to manipulate!

my son is 2 and we are working on climbing in and out using a stool (SUV)...he can't do the buckles yet and I don't want him to! but getting into the seat alone would be nice...

She can't do the crotch buckle, but she climbs in and out and does the chest clip.

My 21 month old can climb in and out, and buckle the chest clip.

Nope---she's 2 and can't even climb in herself. We have a Foonf on the passenger side RF and there's nowhere for her to climb up. It's annoying because she's also tall enough to where I have to fold her in half to get her in the seat without bumping her head.

My DD can do the chest clip but not the bottom clip (I'm glad she can't)

My 2.5 year old can do the chest clip but the bottom is harder so she doesn't want to bother with it yet!

My 3 year old gets in and out, but she doesn't do the buckling.

No. She's almos two and usually doesn't fight getting into the seat, and tries to help with the chest buckle but let's me do it. She's still RF and we have an SUV, so I don't actually see how she could climb in herself? I don't think I could! It would be nice if she could climb in herself once we turn her around before the new baby is here in December.

@autumnlove: My 4 yr old briefly undid his buckles as well. It was a loooooong time ago! I want to say closer to 2? About the same time I would turn around while driving with him out of the seat Now, when it would be helpful, he says he can't do it.

She climbs in and does the chest clip. We usually take her out, not sure she could climb out.

@anbanan15: yeah, I need her to get excited about it again before baby 3 comes! I would love to do just a visual check for her!
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@autumnlove: Same! I keep telling him he can do it himself and it will be a big help once baby comes because I won't be able to reach in there very well. He doesn't really care and is not too thrilled about getting another baby right now lol

No, our he'd need a stool to get in and out by himself! He can do the chest buckle but I usually don't have the patience to wait for him to do it. Mama has places to be!!

LO is just over 2 and I let him get in and help buckle his chest clip but I refuse to show him how to get out. Don't want him to start trying that when he's sick of being in his car seat, or just generally as something to do. I know once he knows how, we are toast.

My oldest (3) can get in and out and buckle/ unbuckle the chest clip.

For those who say that your LO can climb in and out of the carseat, do you lift them up into the other side of the car, so that they basically walk or crawl across the backseat of the car and then climb in? Or are they really climbing in from standing outside on the ground? My LO just turned 2, and we still pick him up and put him in the seat, so I'm just trying to think of what to do next. Thanks!

My 4 year old has been climbing into his seat in both cars for almost 2 years now. In the car his seat is in the middle so that's easy to walk to. In the van he climbs from the door up. He is still rear facing. He can clip his own chest clip but struggles with the crotch. He can unbuckle by himself with the help of a buckle bopper. He will even unbuckle his sister now.

@Foodnerd81: My DS is turning 2 at the end of the month - we have a big SUV and he's still rearfacing and he can climb in himself. But he's also a monkey lol.
Sometimes I have to help boost him but for the most part he can do it himself. He also says "no mama help!" Every time we get in the car now. He can do the top buckle but not the bottom one.

@Chuckles: No, DS climbs from standing on the ground - he climbs right in from the door his car seat is in (passenger side)

My 4.5 year old can manage undoing the crotch buckle. So far he hasn't messed with it while the car is in motion.
He can not buckle himself in yet, he twists the straps.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@NurseDMB: haha- I thought mine was a monkey but I guess yours has her beat!!
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@autumnlove: wouldn't you still have to tighten the straps?
She (4) could so it but the bottom buckle takes her a while so she usually has us do it. Even when she does it though we still have to pull the straps tight.

Yes, he's been climbing in on his own since about 18 months. I have a tall seat (foonf) in an SUV and it hasn't been a problem at all. He actually gets mad if I pick him up and put him in. He's 33 months and still rear facing. I buckle him because he's not old enough to be responsible for putting buckles in the right place.
grapefruit / 4455 posts
Can't buckle but she's been climbing in and out since just over a year. She can buckle the chest clip but that's it, and I'm glad!
