@Mae: For some reason on Mardi Gras we eat pancakes. It's aka Pancake Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday. I'm not sure why it's pancakes and not some other sort of pre-Lenten food, but I don't complain! We always had pancakes at school when I was growing up and a lot of churches host pancake lunches and dinners. It's the best! Feel free to usurp our tradition!
ETA: I don't think it's just a Canadian thing. I think they do it in the UK too....

@heartonastring: @Mae: It's huge in the UK. Basically, It was a way of using up stuff in your cupboard before Lent... Or that's what we were taught. Nowadays it's just an excuse to eat yummy pancakes!

Here (I live in metro Detroit) it's called Fat Tuesday and the big thing is paczkis! They're a Polish pastry, kind of like a jelly donut but...different. Usually custard filled. I find them to be gross, but everyone else around here loves them.
And as a Catholic raised girl, it's a tradition because Lent starts tomorrow, so today is basically when everyone pigs out. Then tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, during which you fast, and Lent begins, so people are choosing things to give up until Easter.

I wonder if this is more of an Eastern Canadian tradition? I've never heard of this! I would, but my husband is all about no carbs, flour, sugar.. anything fun really.

I think IHOP gives out a free short stack of pancakes today (yesterday, technically).
We did red beans and rice for dinner, because I'm from New Orleans, but I did purposefully make pancakes for breakfast (I rarely do). Not quiiite the same, but whatever
