Have you taught your toddler/preschooler about candy safety yet?
Last year she wasn't old enough yet to want to dig into her candy. But this year she is and she is going trick or treating at daycare today. I've told her quite a few times over the last week that she can't have any candy until she comes home and mommy and daddy checks to make sure it's safe. I reiterated at daycare and I think she gets it!

eta: no allergies here so no I never taught this - we do wait until we get home just because its easier on Halloween night. However we did a trunk or treat and it was followed by some Halloween stories and both kids and me ate some of the candy in the bags

Since my kids have food allergies, they know to ask us to check for ingredients. My safety check is a little different from most, but it's nice to know that my kids ask before eating.

Xander has allergies, so I've definitely be drilling him on having us check his candy for milk before eating any, and certainly the daycare is really diligent about making sure he only gets dairy-free treats.

@Mamaof2: in case they get unwrapped treats and to check (us adults) candy wrappers for tampering, etc. and allergies obviously

Are you really Concerned that candy she gets at day care will be tampered with? My daughter isn't old enough for this yet, but I just don't think candy safety is a big concern. If I was that worried I wouldn't let her have any. It's plausible someone could inject something without you ever knowing. But it's not likely...

@catomd00: I was never a trick or treater but my husband has gotten some weird things as a kid. So, yes, I think people are odd and I won't be there. I don't think it hurts to teach her about candy safety, at all. Regardless, I don't want her eating any candy any way because I want to monitor her sugar intake. Daycare doesn't let them eat it there so it's not really a concern but I don't think you can be too careful!

I'll only check her bag for hard candies because I don't want her having gum or fire balls or gobstoppers yet. I haven't told her anything specific.

@regberadaisy: are they going to people's houses? Or is daycare providing the candy. I assumed the latter, which is why it wouldn't cross my mind. My daycare fed DD two meals and snacks a day, so I wouldn't be worried about candy tampering since I trusted them to feed her...maybe I'm just misunderstanding what the activity is.

@catomd00: oooh. Daycare is in a business park and every year they go trick or treating around the business park.

@catomd00: Last year our daycare had each parent bring in enough candy for 1 per student in their respective rooms. Then they would make up a little baggie for each kid. So, parents could technically put in something tampered if they were truly insane. Hopefully daycare would notice? I'm just throwing ideas out there.
We will talk about candy safety eventually, but it's not really a concern right now.

@regberadaisy: That's a totally different story then. In our day care, parents just bring in large sealed bags of candy and then the director/teachers distrbute it out to the classroom, so I trust it without hesitation. I probably wouldn't like my kid trick or treating around a business park without me, beyond just the concern of tampered with candy.

Yeah I wouldn't let my LO ToT around a business park. That would make me really uncomfortable. Parents donated candy to our's and then the kids go to the other classrooms to ToT.

@.twist.: Same here with our daycare. Parents are asked to bring in enough treats for their class.
I check for opened candies, but that's it. DS doesn't have allergies and is great about gauging his own sugar intake. I can leave an entire tub of ice cream out and know he'll only eat 1 scoop worth.

So yesterday, my son went Toting around my husband's office. They set up stations around the floor and I literally have no idea how the candy got there, meaning, was it self purchased or was it coordinated by people hosting the event? Seems sketch, but we work with these people, they had their kids there, so I was okay with it. Had it been my kid in another office down the road, unaffiliated with my employer, I wouldn't have let my son participate. He doesn't understand why there would be people out there that want to tamper with candy.

@HabesBabe: It would worry me with safety. Kids can run off so fast. I would just worry the teachers couldn't keep up with them all. I wouldn't let my LO go ToT in our neighborhood without DH or myself there.

@looch: But when you go ToTing anywhere, you really don't know the "origin" of the candy stash. I mean, it's really slim-to-none chances that people are going to poison or taint candy for kids.

This wouldn't even be on my radar. I take out hard candies and things that have fallen out of the wrapper, but I'm not inspecting each piece of candy to look for needle marks and ??? In all my ToT days I've never come across a piece of tainted candy.

@.twist.: yeah I mean I have heard the stories, I jut don't think the likelihood of it actually happening is very great, so I don't personally perceive it as a big risk. There's a risk you could check all the candy but not notice a piece had been tampered with, too. But again, probably not likely. Sure, I'll teach my kids not to eat candy or other food that's been opened at some point. I am curious now though to know how frequently people actually find tampered candy.

@HabesBabe: I kind of measure it based on affiliation, what does the business have to do with my kid? Are the parents of the kids in that area, who coordinates it?
And you're right, I don't know the origin of the candy in my neighborhood, nor could I reliably trace it to any one house, but for some reason, I trust it more than some random office building. Same thing with a trunk or treat, I don't know who those people are, whereas with my neighbors, I see them, we talk to each other, etc.

@catomd00: I agree, and in all my years of ToTing and also taking kids out to do it, I've never found anything bad. Although I never checked when I was a kid so there's a possibility I did eat something and it's the reason I am the way I am today.

Color me surprised! I totally thought this was a thing in American culture!
Anyway, I'm no more concerned about the safety of them trick or treating around a business park than them taking her on a field trip. It's a tiny business park with sidewalks all over the place.

@regberadaisy: It was a thing when I grew up in the 80's - I don't scour each piece to see if its been tampered with, but I do scour to look for twix bars

@Mamaof2: I was going to write the exact same thing. It was a big deal in the 80s, but you have to remember that we were just coming out of a period of time where there was a TON of crime in NYC, the drug culture was rampant, food wasn't as packaged as it is today.
We've come a long way, baby, lol.

in elementary school, we used to have to watch a halloween safety video every year to watch for things like razor blades or tainted candy. so maybe its a upstate ny thing?? heh
