Anyone here canoe with their kids? We have a large canoe with two seats. We were hoping that we could take our LO (will be 18 months this summer). Everyone would have a life jacket. Just curious if putting her in the middle would be safe.
I realize this is a super random question, and a stretch!

I know nothing about canoeing specifically, but I saw a dad at the beach paddleboarding with all 3 kids riding, ranging in age from 2ish-5. They all had life vests on, this was in the ocean, and they seemed super used to it.
So....with a life jacket on and water you are used to---I think it'd be fine.

If the water isn't too cold and you know the stream, you should be fine - as long as you aren't going for such a long trip that LO will go stir crazy sitting.

we kayaked with my LO when she was much younger - 9 months. I felt totally comfortable with it, but she wasn't really on the go. She haaaaaated it.

We took LO1 canoeing on a lake around 16 months. She did fine, but was hesitant to get in at first. We had two people paddling and one in the middle with her.

So we have only taken our kids once. But when I was little I used to canoe with my parents often--and until I was about 3, I sat at the bow in front of my mom's seat. It worked so well! We could chat about all the things we could see, and my parents didn't need to worry about me jumping out!

@Anagram: @dagret: Yep. We actually go on the lakes up on Mt. Hood, which is really nice (no currents to worry about).

I think it would be fun and a good experience. But I like @woodentulip's experience of sitting with an adult. I think being alone in the middle would be harder to manage a LO.
We are going to take DS out on our boat for the first time this year and he will be 2 this month. We were kind of chicken to do it last year.

We took LO1 canoeing when he was 20 months and it was fun but I was glad that my sisters were paddling and I was in the middle with him because he kept trying to climb out! I was tempted to let him.
