So we have a Ford Taurus sedan that has the latch system but you can't put two car seats on one anchor point so the only way to use the latch system with both seats is to put them on the ends which doesn't work for our needs. We will need to secure a forward facing carseat for my 2 1/2yo and an infant carrier for the newborn. My thoughts are to put the carseat in the middle using the latch system and the infant carrier behind the driver using the seatbelt but not the base. Thoughts? Suggestions?

My friend has kids with the same spacing. She ended up keeping her older one in the middle because it was easier so she could hand her things. She put the baby I think behind the passenger seat so she can kinda look back and see him if needed. Plus she can hand her older daughter a paci or something and have her hand it to the baby. No sense in having a RF seat in the middle if you can't reach them anyways. Plus, I have heard to put the least safe seat in the middle which would be the 2.5 yo.

I heard that it was recommended if you use a side seat that it's best to go behind the passenger. I think the theory is that when you pull over or park on the street and need to get the baby out it's safer because you will be on the sidewalk rather than in traffic.

Where are your latch connectors? If they are in the two outboard positions, you can't share from each side and use latch in the center.
I'd do the infant bucket behind the passneger installed with a belt and the car seat in the middle installed with the belt, unless there is dedicated LATCH in all three seats back there.

My toddler is in the middle and the baby behind the passenger seat. She was only 23 months and still rear facing when the baby was born though (her radian carseats only fits rear facing in the middle). She's usually pretty good, but has been known to do things like pull out the babies hair clips. NO point separating them though, the baby will move into a radian soon and need to be in the middle.

@looch-there are 4 latch connectors which according to the manual can be used with two seats (one behind each driver and passenger) or one seat in the middle
@thehistoryofus, @skipra, @mrs.superhero, @looch: unfortunately the infant carrier will need to go behind the driver because you can't access the passenger side of our car while it is in the garage.
Thanks for the advice, it is great to hear how others have handled a similar situation. We are on the look-out for a bigger vehicle (i.e. most likely a mini-van) but it is hard to justify since we currently have zero car payments and both our cars are in great shape.

@purrpletulips: I'd double check that you can borrow the connectors from the two outboard positions to use it in the middle...that goes against what most car seat technicians advise.
We had our infant bucket behind the driver too, we installed it there thinking my husband would need to take LO to day care and that's the side where he always puts his laptop bag.

@looch: I'll check the book again. Turns out the in the model I have you can use the LATCH system in the middle because they spaced all the anchors the same distance (apparently not always the case) but if you use the LATCH for middle it can't be used simultaneously for either side position.
