Do you use your carseat with the base only?
Do you strap it in with the seatbelt if you're using a different car?
A friend just posted on facebook "I can't go out because my hubby took the car with the base."
I've never even used the base!

We have two bases as well but when the sitter takes her out she uses seatbelt.

We use the base in our car. If I am riding with someone else we buckle it in.

@mrsjazz: Yay! Do you live in a metropolitan area? I can't wait to live somewhere that we don't need a car anymore.

@pastemoo: Yes! We live in NYC. The car seat is pretty easy to install in taxis and Zipcars but we do a lot of public transportation, too.

Bases in both my car and hubs' car. We'd prob remove the base if we're driving/riding with anyone else.

We have 2 bases. I didnt know you could use it without the base. How do you do that?

When DS was in his infant seat, we only had one base since we only have one car. We would usually just take our own car but would have used the seat belt if we needed to.

@Mrsbells: I have the same question. Especially since we're flying with the seat soon. I don't want to take the base with us if we don't have to.

@Mrsbells: @mediagirl: I have the snugride 30. There are notches in the plastic on the top of the seat (near where the buckle is) that you just thread a seatbelt through. It's really easy. Not knowing what carseat you have I can't help more, but the instruction manual will tell you:)

my brother and sil have two bases, but i always seat belt my nephew's seat in when he rides with me.
@Mrsbells: @mediagirl: it's different for every car seat, but there should be some sort of marking on the seat. sometimes it's across the top (where baby's legs are) and sometimes there's an area below baby's legs where you can slip the belt through. if you look at your manual it should tell you exactly where your seatbelt should go.

We usually flip the base into whichever car were using, but if I don't have it, I will just buckle her in.

I used the base in our main car, but I have also used it with just the seat belt.

@mediagirl: when we flew we left the base at home and buckled the seat in. It worked really well and was a lot easier. I hope your manual can explin how to use it.

We don't have a car either, so it'll be 100% seatbelt for us. I hope we find an obliging taxi driver who is willing to wait as we figure out how to install the car seat for the first time when we leave the hospital!

We have two bases but DH never used the one for his car. He has long legs and needs the seat pushed back all the way and the base prevented him from doing this so in his car it was just seatbelt. In my car it was always the base. Not sure what we are going to do this time since we won't be able to put LO in the middle due to DD's car seat and our latch system.

We saved the money and never bought an extra base. If we were taking my husbands car we would just use the seatbelt. If we were taking a different car for a long trip we would just install the base in the other car.

@photojane: @bpcmarj: Wow I had no idea it could be used without the base. We have the graco snugride as well. Is it just as safe without the base?
pomegranate / 3729 posts
@Mrsbells: so long as it's installed right it should be as safe. The benefit to the base is that you only have to line it up once:)

this is so funny because i *knew* you could install car seats without the base (i was a nanny in college) but when i asked the (young) girl at BBB, she was like, oh no, you have to use the base, so i was second guessing myself. DH has a mini cooper and we can only use one car seat, but without the base, i bet we could use others! since it's such a small car though, we'll just stick with the base in his car and an extra in mine. in other family members cars we'll just use the seatbelt. i recently you-tubed a video to see how to install with just the seatbelt but the lady that was doing it made it look absolutely ridiculous to do it every time!
we're getting the maxi cosi mico and this is the video i watched. no wonder people use the base!!

@birdofafeather: same here! I drove a Toyota Yaris (2-door) when DS was born, and there was only one carseat w/base that would fit in my car. I ended up getting a new car but I had no idea I could install it without the base.

@rachiecakes: yeah, i was freaking out for a good 15 minutes because the first car seat we tried (that we were told fit!) didn't fit unless we turned the seat vertically... obviously not going to work with a baby in it!! i was having all these thoughts of having to get a new car with DH going back to school in a month! when the maxi cosi fit with space to spare we both breathed a sigh of relief!

I bought an extra base for my husband's car; but if we're travelling, it'll just be seat belted which is perfectly safe if you do it right.

We only used the base(s), but we didn't travel far or drive in cabs at all with DD in the infant seat
