We are going on a mega road trip in a week. 12 hours each way (split into 2 days on each end). Please suggest awesome toys to keep a 16 month old who doesn't love the car entertained!
We have a buckle buster and ipad
(Thanks!)

Plastic measuring cups! We just went on a 4 hour road trip (that was 6.5 due to traffic) and those babies kept him entertained for awhile! I also gave him a small ball and he would try to see which ones it would fit in. He would bang them together. We would toss them up in the air and let them fall on his lap. Pretty much anything to keep him happy.

We went on a 5 hour road trip and we brought a whole bag of toys and goodies. I was constantly rotating them the whole trip! Thankfully she took a 2 hour nap so it was only 3 hours that I had to entertain her. Are you going to be sitting near him the whole time? Makes a world of a difference. Here's what we took:
Books - Tons of books! Especially "lift the flap" or "touch and feel" ype of books so that she wasn't just flipping through the pages.
Stickers - She was obsessed with stickers. I brought a few pack of stickers and let her stick them on paper, on my face, on her dolls. But only if you'll be monitoring her. Otherwise it could be a choking hazard. Great for practicing pincer grasp too.
Puppets - I brought 2 hand puppets with me and she LOVED it.
Snacks and fruit/veggie pouches - Pouches were the best because it took a while for her to finish one.
Children's music CD - We had her favorite songs on repeat. Yup, we listened to Twinkle Twinkle and Old McDonald for 5 hours. Better than listening to a whining baby!
Toy arch - We also hung our own toys from it
I'm trying to think of what else we took but those were the main things that I remember.

@winniebee: I wish I knew! It usually involves me sitting in the back seat with my Mom Bag of Tricks and every time fussing starts I whip out something else and say, "Look!!" Haha.

E is 15.5 months and loves her magnetic drawing pad. It keeps her quiet for such a long time!

I'm having flashbacks to our cross country move when he was 14 months old and having heart palpitations thinking about it!!!
Thank you all!

Our favorite car tripping toys include cloth books, balls (we have some sensory balls and some with lights on the inside), a shape sorter, and puppets. DS also likes to play with DD's travel magnadoodle and Leaprog Explorer.

There is no such toy, if I could have it, I would buy it!
It's been so hit or miss for us. Sometimes, he just wants to hold his matchbox cars.
