Do you ever get worried about how the airlines handle your convertible carseat? We're gonna have to start taking our Britax w/us when we fly and I'm wondering if it'll get ruined when they toss it around.

We got a cheaper, light weight car seat for travel so if it gets ruined it's not a huge deal.

We got a gate check bag and one way we took it with us to the gate to gate check, and the way back we checked it with the luggage. The seat came out fine. The bag has big black oil streaks and a few scratches so I'm glad we got it!

We have a gate check bag with backpack straps... so the hubs wore it through the terminal, which kept his hands free!

I was asking for a affordable car seat for the ILs car and lots of Bees reco this one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/16932760
@HabesBabe: oh wow, that's brilliant! Link?

You look absolutely RIDICULOUS wearing it, but it's totally worth it. LO was only 8 months when we flew, so I pushed her in the stroller (got a gate check bag for that, too) and hubs wore the carseat. One bonus was that we were able to put our sweaters into the carseat bag before we gate checked it.

@HabesBabe: whoa, adding that to her wishlist! Which car seat do you have?

Yes I totally worry about this since car seats are supposed to be discarded after an accident. If the handlers are throwing my seat around... is it as bad as the impact from an accident?

@HabesBabe I saw a version of that bag that has wheels instead of backpack straps. Would you recommend the backpack version? Do you think it's easier to carry than to wheel around?

@MsInformation: There are some with wheels that you can leave LO in while wheeling it through the airport. Don't know what the seats are actually like, though.

@Weagle I've seen the gadgets that turn car seats into wheeled carriers - do you know if they're just for convertible car seats, or are there versions for infant ones? (We're taking LO on an overseas trip in September, when she'll be 9 months, and she'll still be in her rear-facing infant car seat then.)

@MsInformation: I've only just seen it for convertible seats, but a Snap n Go would probably work well for you.

We bring our seat onboard and G sits in there. We will do this until he's tall enough for a ride safe travel vest instead of a car seat while on vacation.

@MungBean: I gate checked our Britax infant seat and didn't have any issues. So far it's been on 6 seperate flights and been fine... Can you gate check the convertible seat?

@MsInformation: I have the wheeled carseat bag. When I fly with LO alone, I wear her in the Beco in front, wear her diaper bag on my bag (it's a messenger bag that converts to backpack) and wheel the carseat. It's worked well for me on the couple of trips I've taken so far.

We gate checked our car seat the last time we traveled so there's less throwing around. We didn't check any luggage which was why we gate checked. Several airlines we flew past also wrapped up our car seat for us when we checked it in. We bought a car seat specifically for travel, it's the one regberadaisy linked above. Much much easier to carry than the britax ones.

@BoogieBea: ooh I was just wondering if that seat works well for air travel! I'm thinking it will be our IL/airplane seat.

@regberadaisy: It works great for travel. It's very light compared to our Britax seats. If I grab both straps together, I can actually throw it over my shoulder. It's also easy to install and remove on the plane. Definitely recommend.
