Piggybacking on the earlier post about keeping your dogs from eating the baby's toys... Did any of you have issues with your cat jumping into the crib, esp. with the baby in there? The door will probably be closed most of the time that the baby is in the crib, but I'm irrationally worried about this!

Our cat is very curious and territorial and has never once jumped into the crib or gotten in/on any of LO's chairs/bouncers. The only time she did something was when LO was a newborn and we had the bassinnet in the living room and people over. Cat jumped into the bassinet (when LO) wasn't in it and hissed out at the guests. She shows absolutely no interest in LO's things when it's just us at home. She also sits between LO and guests and hisses at them - she is territorial and protective of people getting too close to LO, especially if she is crying.

@ladyfingers: Yes I am currently having this issue. Our Cat leaves the crib alone but we just got and put together the bassinet on Saturday and the cat will not leave it alone. I ended up putting stuff in it (baskets) so he will stop jumping in. He's been using it like a toy and playing in it. It REALLY bothers me and I do not want him thinking it's ok. I'm only 30+1 weeks so we have time for him to get used to it but I'm slightly freaking out about it.

Our cat thinks the nursery is actually her room and she's always in the crib or napping on the glider...I'm not worried because she's declawed and has all her shots...I think cats will actually become to them selves more and baby's stuff alone once the baby shows up....I didn't think cats liked kids? Or so I've heard. They don't like the crying and they don't like the fact that they're strangers. I'm hoping for that

Besides just hanging out in the nursery (our kitties love the sunroom attached to the nursery), neither one of them has tried to jump in the crib, glider, or the pack n play (which is currently set up downstairs). They both seem fascinated by the stroller.

I heard it you line the crib mattress with foil it'll scare your cat into never doing it again (if it jumps in).

a water squirt bottles does wonders. just squirt kitty a few times when he goes near the crib and then all you have to do is leave the squirt bottle on the floor near the crib and the cat will never go near it again. not the nicest thing but it works and it doesn't harm the cat

We have one cat who has been everywhere - in the crib, in the stroller, on the bouncy seat, and the changing pad. She slept on the changing pad every night for weeks. Once we brought the baby home, she hasn't been up there at all. I see her walking along the edge of the crib but I am hoping once LO starts sleeping in there she will stay away from the crib as well.

None of my 3 cats have had any interest in cuddling up with the baby. One does go into the crib when he is awake and playing, but that's it- she will also hang out on the changing table, but not help and change diapers.
Keeping cats out of the nursery lasted less than 24 hours for us, it was too hard so we quit worrying about it and everything has been fine.

Oh my those pictures are so cute! My cats haven't had much interest, but I didn't take a chance, so I put aluminum paper in the crib and on the changing table. They attempted it 2x and never have gone since. They got so scared.

@TurtleDoves: yeah the problem is the future nursery is currently the cat's room. It's where his box and food are and his chair and the whole room is caked in his hair. Even the dog knows not to go in there. We can move everything to another room but he's going to be pissed!
I'm not worried about the cat hurting the baby. I guess I don't really know what I'm worried about! He's declawed and healthy and loves people, even strangers. He's also old and curmudgeonly.
Good tips on the foil and the spray bottle!

One of my cats hid all the time when we brought DD home. The other was curious but never got into the crib or anything. We kept a gate at the door of the nursery (my cats are weird in that they won't jump the gate) or kept the door shut. Now that DD is older, the one cat we still have (the one who hid) will come in and hide under her bed.

@ladyfingers: Our room was the "cat" room too. I would suggest making the move now so he has a chance to get used to a new place to use the litter, etc. It may help with his transition. On a side note, we left LO's floor activity mat out last night and our cats we're having a blast with it. I swear they think it is a toy for them.

@chrispygal: Good point! I guess that means cleaning out that room... ugh. It's basically been our catchall room with all the unpacked stuff from our move back in April. Although the more I do now, the less there is to do later, right?

@LadyFingers: YES! Now, at 35 weeks, after a few loads of laundry and some light cooking/ straightening up and I am totally tuckered out! Front load what you can.

Our cat is extremely nibby, and he has to investigate every new piece of furniture that comes into our house. I let him initially check out the crib once, before LO was born, and that was it. We do occasionally catch him trying to nap in it (when LO isn't in it of course) and have to kick him out, but it's rare. We always shut LO door for naps, and at night we keep her door open and put the cat in the spare bedroom, just to be safe.

@lemondrop: how are your cats expected to resist that canopy and those hanging animals!? That nursery is adorable and the cat looks like he/she is totally hanging out;)
