Mr. Lime still doesn't understand the difference between an infant bucket seat vs convertible, but shared this article with me. We are not going with an infant bucket seat for few reasons including safety reasons. For those that use an infant bucket seat especially as a way to transport a sleeping baby this article is definitely for you.

I think there's a huge difference between using a bucket seat as a place to sleep in general and as a safety restraint during transportation. The problem here was negligence, not the seat.
I will admit that the potential for head flopping/airway blocking during the ride freaked me out every time I put my infant in the car without another backseat passenger (and so I did that very infrequently), but a convertible won't solve that.
I'm curious why the car seat was at the daycare in the first place?

As long as the baby is properly restrained and at the appropriate recline level, the risk to baby is minimal, whether in a car or not. This baby wasn't buckled in properly and I'm guessing they didn't check the recline either. I don't think using a car seat as a long term sleep device is good for multiple reasons, but many of these are cases of user error, not an inherent danger of the car seat.

@honeybear: correct a convertible won't solve a child's airway from being blocked if their head is drooping down and sleeping while transported in a car. However, one of the main reasons people have suggested a bucket seat is because they are more mobile than convertibles thus baby's can stay asleep in them while running errands, at restaurants, when initially coming home. Baby can stay asleep while groceries are put away and dinner is started. That's the kind of prolonged use that I have come across as reasons to get a bucket seat.
The article doesn't say why the seat was at the daycare, but some moms on here have said their DCP allows them to keep the bucket seat there. This way, for instance, mom does drop off and dad does pick up, but they can just buy/ use one bucket seat. I didn't think that baby's were left in the bucket even after the parent leaves.

The recline of the bucket seat in the car is generally different than it is just sitting on a flat surface in the house. That's part of why it's not safe to let them sleep in it once you bring them inside. Plus this child wasn't buckled in, so could have easily shifted in the seat into a compromising position.
@honeybear: A lot of daycares let you store your bucket seat there so that parents can trade off drop-off/pick-up duties. But they definitely shouldn't have been using the car seat as somewhere to put a baby to sleep!!
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Agreed. We liked having a bucket seat for the convenience of daycare drop-off/pick-up, and the fact we could get away with just one seat and two bases until our kids grew out of it. Also, being able to go from car to stroller without waking the baby is nice - the stroller offers a similar recline to a car, generally, but I'm also with them in the stroller to make sure they are breathing okay!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @Adira: Ok, that makes sense as to why it was there. I definitely let LO stay asleep in the bucket seat when he was sleeping after a car ride. I always took him with me and adjusted the recline wherever I went in the house and kept an eye on him, though. That seems to be where things went wrong here.

I am glad that this kind of awareness is finally happening in the US...when my son was born 5 years ago in Europe, there was a lot of literature about airway constriction and only using the bucket seats while traveling in a car and not for overnight sleep.

Keeping the child secured in their carseat for a nap after a car ride is a lot different than letting a child sleep in a carseat unsecured for overnight/ nap sleep. We let our daughter nap in her seat after rides but didn't unbuckle her until we removed her, which keeps the child in the proper, upright position.
If we were having another, I wouldn't hesitate to get a bucket seat again, knowing how to properly use it.
