I've never attended a baptism before but lo is getting baptised soon. i'm sure i will have many questions...but the first is regarding his gown.
The baptism is immediately after the mass...a private baptism.
Should he wear his white outfit during mass? Or do I change him into it afterwards but before the baptism?

Out of all of my 3 girls only 1 of them has worn it during mass and it was my LO that was baptized this weekend. but it was a group one and they wanted to get things going right after mass.
If they don't direct you too, I wouldn't. It might not be white by the end of mass if you have a baby that spits up or has a blow out, lol.
ETA: We did have a cute outfit for her to wear during mass that was mostly white, she will be able to wear it for Easter too:)

i would ask the priest what he prefers..
have you gone to the class? they will usually let you know what is expected for the day of the baptism...

@MrsCastro: no our parish is all seniors, so no they dont hold a class 
this is the first baptism in years at the church. I guess i will ask on Sunday.

@wheres_c: As a practical matter, I might wait to dress him in the gown. It shouldn't matter as a matter of procedure--my LO didn't even have a gown, just a special outfit that he'd been given. Our parish is pretty conservative and no one said anything. "Putting on Christ" is the important part.

Since we used heirloom gowns, both of my kids wore outfits before/after the baptism and only wore the gown during the sacrament. DD wore a tiny white sundress and DS wore a white onesie and little gray slacks. I just put their gowns over their outfits right before we went in the church and took them off right after pictures so we can keep them nice.

we aren't having a private baptism, but my biggest fear is blowout during the mass!

We haven't had any mass blowouts.....yet.....(only been going 3w, lol) but it would be my luck, her baptism will be the one and only and it will be huuuuge.

Practicality aside, I would! Congregations get excited for baptisms, and I bet you would get a lot of positive responses. It is so neat to see the church grow and an amazing witness for your community!

@LovelyPlum: Thats why I was asking about it! We are pretty new to the church and don't know many people. It would be great if some of the congregation wanted to stay after and be there for the baptism.

@LovelyPlum: ok awesome.....i have never seen an infant baptism in the catholic church (or any church for that matter) so i didnt know if wearing white before the sacrament was frowned on because he still has his original sin.

I put DS in his baptism gown after mass/before sacrament only b/c the gown was over 100 years old and I was soo afraid of tearing it! I had him in a cute, dressy outfit and brought the gown on a pretty hanger so random people could see (like previous posters said, people love a baptism!).

@wheres_c: Normally I would expect the baby to wear the gown at mass. It seems like it would be a bit of a faff to change it if the baptism is straight after.
As for "original sin" etc the church has changed its view on infant baptism. It was one of the first things Pope Benedict XVI changed stating that it is indeed possible for unbaptised babies to go to heaven.
I could never imagine anyone at church frowning on your baby for wearing white to church pre-baptism. A baptism in the community is nothing other than a major cause for celebration.

My DD wore her white outfit for the mass. She was 8 months old at the time though, so poopslosions are no longer a regular occurence thank god.
