DH's family lives across the country and they are Catholic (as are DH and I). DH would like to have LO baptized in the church he was baptized in, in his hometown, with all his family there. I'm totally on board, it would be amazing if his family could be there.
Does anyone know if this is possible? We were able to get married in his hometown, outside our parish, so DH really thinks it'd work out. I hope so, but I haven't heard back from the parish in his hometown yet.

We were told that you had to be a registered member for at least 6 months. They didn't say anything about not being allowed to register if you didn't live in the area. Also, they make you take a class with the godparents, but maybe they will allow you I do that near home?

Is your DH still registered at that Church?
I am still registered at my home Parish, even though we technically live in another Parish. We didn't have any problems having Chloe Baptised at my home Church, which is the same Church I made all of my Sacraments!
For what it's worth, we did not have to take any classes with the Godparents or have any paper work signed. We had to take one 1-hour Baptism class and that's it!

You have to be a member for 6 months in our parish. But maybe with special connections you can work something out?

DH isn't still registered there, he hasn't lived there in nearly 10 years. I hope they'll work something out for us, given the circumstances. There's no way his family could come across the country to be there for LO's baptism.

We have to be registered in our parish and go through baptism classes there. It is the state cathedral, though, so I don't know if it is more strict than other parishes?

We just moved an hour from our previous town, and I've been spending the past week or so looking for a church that will baptise LO.
One thing I've learned is there are no hard and fast rules across the religion.
Many of the obstacles I faced were:
*6 month attendance requirement
*must be registered parishners
*must donate more than we are able
*must be married (we're not)
*must take a class
*only does baptisms once a month and dates didn't work.
I *finally* found a great church that told me that there were no rules as long as we spoke to the father and asked him.
We went to mass today and spoke to him and he's willing to do it whenever we are able!
So what I've learned in my search is that each churches rules are different and there is some level of flexibility. I am hopeful for you that once you speak to the priest and explain your reasons that he will agree to do it

We baptized LO outside our parish, at the church connected to the catholic h.s..that DH went to. They only do it for alums or connected folks but it was a lot easier for our extended family. I also have a cousin in CA who was baptized in my grandmas church in NJ for similar reasons to yours. So it sounds like you or DH's family need to talk to his church and hope they go for it! Are his parents still registered there? I was baptized at the church my mother was baptized at, which is where my parents were married, but they were not registered there (although my grandparents were).

@Mrs. J: His aunts and uncles are (his mom lives a few towns over). It's a small town and I'm really really hoping the priest (who knows his extended family pretty well) will realize how special it'd be. It's not like we want to have LO baptized there because it's a pretty church or something like that. We want our family to be there.

@septemberlove: with our eldest daughter, we were living on the East Coast, but wanted her baptized on the West Coast where our families were. I hadn't lived in my hometown in about 10 years as well, but the priest knew my parents and sister, so it was fine. We flew in a week before the baptism and took a class with the godparents. Hope it works out for you!
