You have to choose one or the other.
Before babies, I was team dogs.
Now if I had to choose, I'd go cats--more independent, go in litter boxes, etc etc.

I'm really, really allergic to cats so team dogs for me. I do love the way cats crap in someone elses garden though - dogs crap in their own garden and I have to clean it!!

It's so hard to choose! I've always had both.
Cats, because they are more independent.

Cats! Dogs are way too much work and you can't just leave them at home for the weekend! Cats are easy and self-sufficient! Just give them enough food and a clean litter box and they are good to go!
Not only will I NEVER have a dog, but I kind of abhor people who do AND bring them to my house uninvited simply because they can't leave them at home! I invited YOU, not your damn pet! I was so mad when we hosted Thanksgiving a couple years ago and TWO people brought their dogs with them without even giving me a heads up in advance!!!! WTF!!!
But I'm allergic to both.

Dogs!! I love cats, but dogs are the best! Love them!! Plus my SO is allergic to cats.

Cats! I love puppies too, but MAN, they are a LOT of work, and I like how low maintenance my kitty is. I will happily get a dog once LO is old enough to take responsibility for it.

Dogs! I'm a cat mom, but I definitely love dogs more. I can't wait to get a puppy!

I have a few friends who are allergic or just dislike cats. I can go either way but both DH and LO are smitten over kittens. Went to Petco this weekend, and they melted in front of the cat adoption center.

@Adira: Haha, I get SO offended by my in-laws when we have to hang out with them and my dog is not welcome. I don't expect it at friends' houses, though. To me, she's a part of my family and should be welcome at family gatherings. And if you're making me fit YOUR schedule by driving 45 minutes after a 9 hour work day to hang out with all of you for another 2-3 hours and then get home at 11pm, then my dog should be welcome to come.
/rant, lol.

Cats for sure! Not trying to hate on dogs, but they need too much attention. I don't have time to take them on walks and interact with them properly. Cats are happy to have someone pet them a couple times a day.
That being said, we are a no-pet household DH is allergic, and we moved into a house that was overrun with pets and it took us over a year to get rid of all the stink and hair - it turned of DH from ever having pets

I have both...and I love both. My cats are my babies.
But I'm tired of the litter box. I love small animals, and DH lvoes big dogs, but I told him that if I don't have any cats after these ones, then I'll have to have some small dogs. We can still have the big ones. I need an itty bitty, though.

Dogs fo lyfe! I don't dislike cats, but I am for sure a dog person.

@MrsCB: haha, I'm betting my in-laws feel the same way as you, but to ME, pets are NOT family and do not need to be treated as such. Just because you can bring your kids to my house if I invite your family, doesn't mean you can bring your pets! Don't you think it would be weird if you invited me over and I brought my pet gerbal, hamster, bird, and three cats? (Note: I don't actually have these pets, but I'm pretty sure it would be bizarre if I brought them with me everywhere) Just because dogs are more needy doesn't make them equal to humans in my opinion!

@Adira: LOL, yes that would be weird. But all of those animals are not dogs and are perfectly happy to be left alone for hours on end. Dogs however, are pack animals and do not like to be alone all day and all night. It's not a very nice thing to do to the dog to leave them for that long since they get lonely.
And I'm not talking about stopping by someone's house on a Saturday afternoon for a couple hours, when you're otherwise home most of the day. In those cases, of course leave the dog at home. The times I've been really upset were Christmas day (because to me she is my family I want to celebrate with her, not leave her alone all day if I don't have to) and recently when we went to MIL's house after work, which we were going out of our way to do and were gone most of the day and all evening. I actually got really mad at the last one and told DH that if the dog's not welcome then I guess we're not bring DS over there either, haha.
Sorry for the novel + threadjack!

@MrsCB: So what I'm getting out of this is that I shouldn't invite my in-laws over again since I don't want them to bring their dogs!
ETA: I think the thing that REALLY bothered me is that they brought their dogs without telling me first. If they had said "Hey, we can't leave <dog's name> home all day, is it okay if we bring him?" I probably would've said yes, even though I don't really like dogs AND I'm allergic. But they didn't even tell me! They just showed up and suddenly there were dogs in my house! And THEN they let their dogs outside without leashes to go poop and we live in a condo association and are NOT allowed to have dogs outside off leashes (or fenced in), so they could've gotten me in big trouble with my condo association!!!

I really love both but we're dog people!
I like dogs that are as independent as cats, and cats that are as playful as dogs!

I have had both. I have a dog. I prefer kitties. Husband is allergic.
